Jack Rabbit or Cottontail distress for eastern WA coyotes?
« on: December 12, 2009, 11:13:45 AM »
Just curious if a jack rabbit or cottontail distress would be best to use in the wenatchee area for dogs.  we dont have many if any jack rabbits that i know of around here but the cottontails are plentiful.

so do i go with a call that would be more native to the area or do it really matter what i use as long as i use it properly

thanks,
Steve

I have an electronic game call and i play cottontail only 2 times(once, wait a couple minutes, play again, wait another few minutes) and i get coyotes running in. Funny though cause they have came within 40yds of me doing that and i missed yet i shot one the other day at 200yds..
Make every shot count cause ya might not get another.

i don't think it makes alot of difference as long as it sounds covincing.  if you feel that it wouldd be out of place remember we have snowshoe rabbits around here also.  I find that as long as the sound has that sound of desperation to it it works.  you might like to have a few different sounds to change things up.  i keep a record of the sounds i use on a stand a will hunt the same stand three times in a week and have called in dogs every stand especially if i've just spooked them and haven't taken a shot.

I use alot of different jack rabbit sounds, depending on the intensity im looking for...some are louder than others.  Just like bearmanric, I use a few bird bytes aswell.  I used to go with the theme, play what is the prey in the area; however, now days I use what I am confident in!  Somedays ill use a kidgoat and others coons distress.  If I know an area has been hit hard, ill use calls out of left field....just my methods though!
