Unit 117 late season elk!
« on: December 01, 2009, 09:00:55 PM »
He's not a monster but will be good eating! I got in my stand at 2pm and at 2:13 I had three cows at 30yds behind my tree. They must have sensed something was not right because they would not come any closer. I watched them for an hour with no way to get a shot off then 2 of them decide to lay down. About 20 minutes later a couple of does come in and I figured maybe the elk would come run them off. But they stayed bedded down. This is the second time I have sat there and had cows come this close but would not commit. At about 4:15 I see the does ears perk up and they started staring in front of them. I then see two elk coming straight in front of me. Both were 2x1's. They came right in and ran the does off. They then turned around and pushed each other around for a few seconds, I guess they were deciding who was gonna eat first. Well the loser decided to come closer to my stand so I let him have it. Nice quatering away shot at about 16yds. Took out one lung and straight through the heart. He only made it about 60yds and piled up.

Nice 117 bull Elkslayer.
From some locals it sounds like the herd is gaining some numbers in that area. We even had a few pass by near Loon Lake this summer.

I would say that the herd is gainging pretty good too! But the 45 cow tags they gave out for rifle this year and last year aren't helping. It wouldn't be so bad if they were good for just the normal season. But it opens up again the 16 of this month and runs till the 30th. The majority of them are down pretty low in the valley that time of year.

Nice bull, congrats.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.
