" I cant help but get caught up in what the old trappers might be thinking or doing back then..really a cool feeling...thanks Eric..Oh,and rainshadow built me a scaled down version of a Russell buffalo skinner, that knife works great on beaver...

Pop always said he was born a hundred years too early.  I use to think living the Mountain Man life in the 1800's would be the ultimate.  Then I read Crow Killer, the story of Liver Eatin Johnson.  Yeah, maybe it wouldn't be the ultimate - you never knew when someone was going to be after your scalp.  Ah, what the hell, not all that different than today, just more in your face.  ( by the way, the Robert Redford version is not even close to the true story, way to warm and fuzzy - go figure)
May that for which I prepare never come to pass.

ya, it's not a bad smell, seems to kind of linger on the meat too.  Could be one reason all the carnivores love em so much.  The raw oil from the oil sacks can be a little foul.  Nothing compared to a mink or even worse, an otter.  Hit the scent gland on one of them and you'll just about puke. :bdid:

Rasbo, forgot to mention the fleas on beaver :yike:.  They are not the same as what you would see on a dog or a cat.   I've only seen them on Musktats, Nutria, and Beaver.  Any way, you should be able to spot them pretty easy, their quite a bit larger than regular fleas and are kind of amber in color.  I've only ever had a couple get on me.  Never bit me and were easy enough to catch.  Just thought I'd make you aware.  Usually there are quite a few on those critters when their "fresh".
