You know, I did some thinking about this today.. The fact that you choose to stick with archery instead of taking "the easy" way of rifle hunting says a lot about your character and perseverance.

And to quote my father when I told him about your deer, "not bad for a guy who nearly died a year ago".

Again, great job.

I can't tell you how many people kept telling me and pushing me to go rifle hunting this year, maybe dozens. The thing is I enjoy archery so much that it wouldn't be quite the same experience for me. One reason I've enjoyed archery is because of the sense of accomplishment you get when you go out in the woods and take down a big game animal with pure human strength. Thats one reason why I built my longbow a couple years ago. I had wanted to take down an elk with the most basic of weapons that I had cut down, shaped and tillered with my own hands. That sense of accomplishment is just barely 2nd compared to my deer yesterday. I have nothing bad to say about rifle hunters, in fact theres been times through the years when I wish I could have had a rifle to take down a big buck or big bull that was to far out of archery range, but to me its worth the extra effort to try and kill one with a stick and string.

For those of you that don't remember, this was Jesse this Spring. Picture was taken at his sisters house in Burlington. Jesse is in the middle, Chris, Willie, Al, & and Adam surrounding.

At this time last year, Jesse was in the hospital hanging onto life. His progress and accomplishments are truly amazing and testimony that the Man upstairs looks after his children.

Some people spend their entire life wondering if they made a difference. Marines don't have that problem.
He who shed blood with me shall forever be my brother.

Congrats, always remember that score or horn size don't make it a trophy.  Sounds like you worked hard for him and it paid off, that is something to say in itself.

Great job Jesse, that'll be better eatting than my unfilled tag. I don't know your story, but I'm going to search the site for more info on you. Obviously there are a lot of people on this site that think a lot about you. That tells me something. Good luck on your next surgery, and your full recovery. You are an inspiration, even though I don't know you.  Mark

Congrats on the buck this year Ouchfoss.  You and I have never met, but reading your story and your posts in this thread are inspirational to say the least.  Not only your can do attitude and success since the accident, but your apparent attitude before as well.  The willingness to make and use your own bow to take an elk is impressive in its own right.  We need more young men like you out in the woods.

Keep up the good work and my well wishes for you in your continued enjoyment of the outdoors.  I would be proud to shake your hand and your welcome in my hunting camp anytime.
