Coyote bait ?
« on: December 16, 2009, 08:04:18 AM »
Howdy.  Last week one of my steers died so I drug it 150 yards out into the pasture so I could shoot coyotes off of it.  A couple of days later I pulled a dead calf out of its momma and put it with the other steer.  Like I said, they have been out there for a week and not a single bite out of either one not even from the buzzards, ravens or eagles. Usually I have dogs on a carcass within a few hours.   Do you think that with the temp below freezing that it took the smell out of the meat or could it be something else?  I'm getting frustrated.
Thanks.

I poked a couple holes in it with my .300 just to let the air out.  I just noticed that the eyes are gone but nothing else has been touched.  I might try cutting it open this evening.

I have a friend who has three or four pait piles out and has had coyotes trot right on by.  Several that he's shot have been pretty fat still.  Give it time and they will be on it.

Well I came home this morning and there was one coyote on it and a bunch of ravens.  The dog was gone by the time I got my rifle but he will be back.   :IBCOOL:

Once they start, you are golden.

At first I thought maybe you had treated the animal.  In my experience, a coyote won't touch a dead animal that was treated with penicillin.

I've seen Gutpiles go a whole weekend during the deer opener. But once they decide to hit it it's gone in short order. Where do you live Polarbear. I'll be out tomorrow.  :chuckle:

Well, I managed to 2 dogs off of it before my neighbor buried the carcasses.  What was he thinking?  He is the one always begging me to shoot the damn things, haaahaaaa.

Haaahaaaa....  Now the cows are smelling around the burial spot.  The thing I don't like is the coyotes come back to smell around but stay tight to the cows.  They are used to me shooting at them and have learned to use the cows as cover.  That is why it is so hard to hunt them at night around here, as soon as a light goes on the dogs run right in the middle of the herd and hunker down.  Lil *censored*s!  I should make a cow decoy.  I'm thinking about setting my treestand on the pole that my wife had set for me and trying some long distance calling this weekend.

is baiting coyotes legal in this state? I know is a no no with bear but ok for deer (damn regs are so confusing). Why is there not a more specific area in the regs addressing coyote hunting. Whats i there now is only like a half page at best and thats mostly talking about not shooting wolves.
