angry duck hunter
« on: January 12, 2008, 09:07:02 AM »
Anybody know an a##hole named Jim Hobbs?  I went duck hunting this morning with a friend of mine and our sons(16 and 7), got out early to get blind and get dekes set up.  After about 15 minutes a guy(Jim Hobbs) came up in a 4 wheeler and proceeded to swear at us saying that we were in his spot.  He parked his 4 wheeler in front of our blind and then swore at us for about 10 minutes, then threatened to kick our ass while our kids watched.  We waited it out for a while, but seeing that he would not leave we decided to for fear of our safety.  We had to restrain ourselves from taking his bait to get into a fight.  He has the nerve to park his truck right next to the house that we are renting.  When we rented this house our landlord told us that we had exclusive right to hunt the property except for one other guy.  We didn't expect that guy to be a total *censored*!!  There is no dispute that we both have the right to hunt the property,  but first to blind, first to hunt has always been the rule that we have gone by?  It got so bad that I called the Whatcom County Sheriff out because of his threats against our safety.  They came out with 4 cars because of the weapons involved.  By the time they got there we were already back at our house.  They talked for a while, called fish and wildlife, and then told us that we did the right thing, but that there was nothing that they could do to prove disorderly conduct.  Fish and game told them that there was nothing they could do either, its not a crime to interfere with somebody elses hunt!!  So while I sit here typing this, *censored*(Jim Hobbs) is out there shooting at ducks!!! >:( >:(

I got a hold of fish and game myself, and the warden told me that the anti-harrassment law for hunting was put in place mainly for harrassment from PETA and other types.  He also said that if we were willing he would attempt to procecute Jim Hobbs for that charge.  The warden seems to be a great guy and as he puts it "I hunt everything with feathers so I know how it works".  I am so glad that he hunts and understands how things work.  He is currently talking to Jim Hobbs as I write this so we'll how things work out.

What a terrible display of "sportsmanship" for the kids to have to see. Was it just the one guy? Is there only one spot to set up out there?  You should go out there again tomorrow morning even earlier and bring a video camera, and of course, leave the kids home this time. If he does the same crap again pull out the video camera. Just that might be enough to make him go away, but if he's too stupid to shut his mouth, the video should make it much easier to prosecute him for harassment.

Thank God for getting the right game warden out here!  He talked to him and he admitted to the threats.  The game warden also said he would be issued a ticket in the mail if the prosecuter agreed with the charges.  Maybe there is some justice after all.

All I have to say is WOW!!! I've never heard of such behavior. This is the kind of behavior that gives the anti-hunters more ammo saying we are a bunch of neanderthals.

Call 911 on the cell phone and hold it up so they can hear him when he's screaming at you, it works .

I hope that I didn't affend anybody with my language earlier.  I was pretty worked up.  I'm starting to calm down now.  I just don't understand why a guy would get so angry as to threaten us in that way.  He could have just talked to us and we probably could have worked it out.  There is about 100 acres to hunt on with more than one good spot!!  I can't tell you how many times I've showed up in an area planning to hunt and found someone allready there.  That's hunting!!  You just have to move on to another spot.

Bear, I've found people like this salmon fishing in Alaska, rock climbing in Washington, surfing in Hawaii etc. They are every where and then there are absolutely wonderful people to over shadow these a$$ H*!&$ so you visit or experience is a memorable one.

I have met far more nice people over the years than the one I met today.  It's just very frustrating to meet someone like I did today.  I even felt bad because my landlord had to get involved to verify that we both had permission.  I called him to apoligize for any inconvenience that I may have caused him and he told me that he was just going to post it for the rest of the season and not allow any hunting.  Really frustrating considering I didn't do anything to create the conflict.  For the last couple weeks of the season I'm going to have to watch the ducks land from my house.  I actually stopped duck hunting about 10 years ago because of the frustration of finding good hunting spots.  Now that my son is hunting and we HAD a good spot we were having a lot of fun.

bear, sounds like you set a good example. No shame there. I know from expericence placing cuffs on peoples wrists, that you are going to run into a certain percentage of the population that do not even know how to behave. This guy may well be one of these types. Not worth risking an assault charge. Better to walk away, get everyone to a safe place, then contact law enforcement. If you dialed 911 from the blind and held the phone in his face, this may have triggered him to doing something stupid. Not worth it. Many times in my life, that sure thing (your private hunting area...) turns out to be a "dud". You did good.

iceman,  I know that I did the right thing, but I am soooo frustrated!!!  When he was screaming profanity for 10 minutes straight and threatening to kick our asses while our kids watched, I knew that I shouldn't take his bait, but all that anger just built inside me with no proper way to express it!! :bash:  There is a big part of me that wishes that I would have just kicked his ass :beatdeadhorse:, but I know that would have caused more trouble :bash:.  In the words of the great poet Rodney King :bs: "can't we all just get along". :violent1:

I hear ya'. Ten minutes of threats and profanity in front of kids, sounds like he is a mental case.  :dunno: Probably better you didn't asswhoop him. Besides, best example you set for the kids was walking away. To get out your frustration, hit the gym or firewood pile.  :chuckle:

I have been there, a long time ago while in college, my buddy and I came out of a dancehall/bar....he and I lifted weights back then...could do some serious damage to some *censored*s face...  Get to his car and three smaller guys are there, one setting on my buddy's hood. We ask...'hey, can you get off the hood?..." You know what came out of Fheads mouth...? He replied..."Make me.." So as we are squaring off to destroy these three buttwipes, the girls we took dancing started getting all female, and crying "oh..you guys...don't fight..." They stalled the scene enough for *censored* to clear the car, and no smackdown. It bothers me to this day that I did not wipe the lot with his face.   This is the one you will remember.  Probably better without the asswhoop in both cases... :dunno:

I have decided that any time someone else decides to harass me while out hunting the first person I am going to call is the cops. I'm not even going to give them the time of day.

I called the game warden today to see if he did indeed issue a ticket.  He called back this afternoon to tell me that he talked to the prosecuting attorney about the charge of obstruction of legal hunting and the aggrevated way it was carried out, and the prosecuting attorney agreed with the charge :).  The game warden said that he called the "offender" and told him that he would be issued a ticket of $540.  I hope that I can finally let this anger inside of me go now that I feel somewhat vindicated.

That's good news. The lucky thing is that the "offender" admitted to what he did. Without that admission, there probably would have been no case, as it would have been your word against his. But he doesn't sound like the smartest guy in the world.

Too bad you had to lose your rights to hunt that land though. That's the worst part of the whole fiasco.

Bear...follow up the the game agent and really let him know how you felt about this guys actions.  Any prosecuter with even a little sack with admission of threats would easily go after a charge called "Disorderly Conduct".  I have seen a lot of guys get arrested and even booked into jail for getting ready to fight at bars and sporting events.  All were charged with disorderly conduct.  Basically any actions by a person that would likely lead to an assault would be disorderly conduct.  Discuss this charge with the game agent also.  Hammer the prick as that is totally unacceptable and people like that need their ass kicked or charged.  Except you kick his ass then he will call the police.  Jerks like this don't call if they win, but when they lose they always call.

Another thing to follow up on is your "Jerk" a convicted felon or someone with a domestic violence conviction in his past and thus, prohibitted from being in possession of a firearm? He didn't just start acting that way and get caught the first time. I suspect he has a nasty past.

SWEET!  He should have been decent from the beginning- if he had no place else to hunt it's likely he would have gotted an invite.  Now he looks like a dick and has to pay a fine... :chuckle:

Shoot shovel shut up!!. No just joking, your actions were correct. I hunt private property for deer for that reason, I hunt ducks where nobody in there right mind would go, almost impossible to get out. People like him deserve a good ass kick, I'm fairly sure if he ran into my hunting group, he would have a very bad day!!. It is mind blowing that in front of kids that he would do that, I'm glad he has to pay a fine maybe that will bring some sense to the retard. If not one day he may put his mouth on the wrong person and he will become the hunted. I hope you find an area to hunt that you can have a good time with your children, and pass on the correct values of hunting.

There you have the reason behind his attitude.  His parents named him James Leslie Jr.   He was ridiculed as a youngster and teased unmercifully by his peers.

yes, the officer's name was david jones.  he was very helpfull!  someone that you would definitely want on your side.  I figured this thread was dead a long time ago, until a friend called me and asked if I had another problem?  No problems this year, but that's because I decided I'm done with duck hunting.  It's just not worth the hassle.  Duck hunting in our area is just way too competitive to be fun!  I had several friends try to get me to get my stamps and go, but I no longer have any desire to go.

Yep! combat hunting sucks alright, problem is alot of ethical true hunters are quiting and that leaves a bunch of yahoos left to really ruin it for the future.

This is the first time I have read this post but it still stirs up alot of emotion in me. Me and my seven year old son were in that duck blind with bear and his son that morning. We were sitting in the blind waiting for it to get light when 2 four wheelers pull up to us and shine there lights right into the blind. The guy on the front four wheeler gets off and repeatedly calls us out of the blind to "kick our asses while our kids watched". Not getting out of that blind was one of the hardest thing I've ever did. I kept playing it over in my mind, do I really want to put these kids in a situation where people are fighting with all those loaded guns around. Somebody could have easily got shot. I know I did the right thing, but to tell you the truth, it doesn't make it any easier.
Oh yah, did I mention that this assh#le not only did all this in front of our kids, he did it in front of his own. It turns out the guy on the back four wheeler that we couldn't see because of the headlight was his son. I found out later that he problably wasn't much older than my son, maybe about 10 yrs old. Hopefully his mother is a better role model for that boy then his dad is or he don't stand a chance.

Bear and Streak, I believe this is your case filed in Whatcom Co. Dist Court.

Hobbs, James Leslie Jr
Defendant

Whatcom County Dist  L00213901  01-24-2008

Case numbers starting with "L" are generally reserved for Wildlife....

Maybe asswipe is angy his whole life cause his momma named him Leslie.
