Cow elk permit for '10
« on: December 16, 2009, 10:10:11 PM »
I'm looking at putting our girls in for cow permits.  TheTeanaway C unit 335 which starts Dec 19-Jan 10 sounds like a good hunt that does not interfer with school and deer season.  The only thing I worry about is weather, mountain passes and are the elk in private property or winter feeding stations by then?  Has anyone hunted that hunt and what was your experience?  The girls don't want to miss out on our anual mule deer hunt again.  Thanks

I wouldn't waste your time, as you will be competing with advanced hunters that can shoot cows. Most of the elk weather pending will be down low, which leaves less room to hunt, and more private property to deal with.
my 2 cents-cs

I'm assuming you're talking about doing this a year from now, not next week, right? :dunno:

Yeah, I want to know if it is worth putting in for the permit with my teenage girls.  They can shoot, both have shot 3-4 deer each.  Just wanted to know if the snow would be  tough or the elk so far down that they are in private land and it is not a hunt.  We have an RV or tent to hunt out of depending on the conditions.  It would just be convenient not to have to pull them out of school for the second time to do a hunt.  One of the girls will be out of school and in a local college.  She would also be on winter break and we only have to work with work schedules.  Thanks

If there is a lot of snow like the last three years, the elk will have migrated to the Quilomene.  The few remaining elk will be eating hay put out by private landowners.  You could hunt around the public land outside of Cle Elum, but the snow will be deep and only a few elk in the area.  Then again, all you need is a couple cows.  I think you should apply for this permit, it fits your time restraints and if you think positive, it might be a productive hunt.

I live in Cle Elum and have hunted this area all my life it's not your best bet for elk but its still pretty decent and worth a shot.If you put in and get drawn PM me and I might be able to give you some good spots to try.

Thanks for all your input.  Its seems to be 50/50 to me.  If we do decide to draw for that unit (and get it) I will PM you HHPro.

It is a good unit if you know where the elk go and when they move they really move here.I would be more then happy to give you some good advice or even show you some good area.

Most of these late hunts have been created to try pressuring elk away from agricultural crops and hay piles. Usually the elk move in at night to feed then leave in the morning. If you get help finding the runways it can be exciting.
