German Shorthair Question
« on: December 17, 2009, 06:28:20 PM »
Would you purchase a 1.5 year old German Shorthair? owner says he has been trained and is experienced, price is right and my hunting dog now (french Brittney) is 12 years old and can not hear a word I say!

I would buy it. I have two GSP's and I love them.

If you had a choice would you pick a male or female and why?

Thanks

Choice is yours. A male may have a tougher time adjusting to your older dog and your dog to him. If the female is an alpha you may also have issues. GSPs are a great breed I got a three year old last Christmas for free and she is doing great. Males I have hunted over hunt harder and tend to cover more ground. Females hunt smarter and tend to not range as much. These are MY experiences not a lock on how the whole breed is. I say take the dog out, watch it work, see if it fits your style if hunting. If all is good buy it and have a great time with it. If it is not what you thought, pass. Bottom line it needs to fit into your house and hunting plan or you will never be happy with it and most likely sour you on a machine of a hunting breed when bred correctly. Remember the dog is new to you and you to it. We are just now really settling in with the dog we got last year, it will not be bonded to you like a pup you bring home, it will take some patients form your end, but worth it in the end :twocents:.
Good luck and I hope it all works out, I love my labs but they are not a GSP.

I would say go hunt with the dog and see what there version of training means. If they're serious about getting him to a good home, they should be more than happy to do go out with you.

I plan on going to see the dog tommorow, if all goes well I will ask to take him home to see how he acts with my other dogs and possibly take him out and see how he works.

my newest was a 1.5 YO GSP with not a lick of training..... i've had him about 6 months and he's very close to being fully broke... he is steady to wing and shot.... is finishing his force fetching... i just need a little to fine tune on him...  I'd pick a female over a male....  females tend to be easier to work with and aren't as bull headed.... that's just from my experience...  :twocents:

My ex had one of those and she was the greatest dog.  I have been looking for a mix like that for awhile.  If there is a litter would you mind passing on the info?  Thanks.
