Rut during muzzy season this year?
« on: December 19, 2009, 05:14:22 PM »
I'm curious what everyone saw this year during west side muzzy season.  I hunted around Longview, and didn't get a single response to my bugling.  I ended up killing a bull on day 2, so i ended up bugling for only one day (saturday).  I'm curious what others saw.  I know there were elk hearing my bugling, but I also know that it can vary day to day, ridge to ridge, etc.  Anyone get in on any rut activiity during muzzy season?

I would think that Muzzy guys hit peak rut or close to it.  Where I hunted the last few days of early archery it was just getting going good.

the area i hunted for archery not one elk would make a sound,so i went back in the last few days of sept and they still wouldnt make a sound. i saw the bulls with the cows, but they would not say anything and if you called to them the bulls would leave the cows and run.they were talking in mid oct.

When I used to hunt the muzzy season it seemed like the elk were in peek rut. It has been 4 years since I hunted that season. Like Crunchy said this year it seemed like they were just getting fired up toward the end of archery. I killed my bull on the last day but we did have bugle activity all thru archery.

I had the multi-season elk, and we had bulls bugling during archery season.  I fully expected them to be going during muzzy season, but no such luck.  It is good to hear that they were bugling for some people during muzzy season.

Got drawn in a group for the Toutle Bull tag this year for muzzy and the bulls were bugleing pretty good! Got into alot of screamers but they didn't want to come in to us, just alot of talking! The three of us all tagged out on bulls though, it was an awesome hunt!
