blood removal?
« on: December 19, 2009, 05:56:15 PM »
i shot a merganzer drake today, overall fairly cool looking bird and because it is worthless from an eating it point-of-view i am going to go ahead and mount it. the problem is that the brest has  quite a bit of blood on it. I already wiped it down with a warm damp cloth and got most of it off. my question is does anyone know of a good way to clean the feathers really good to get it ready to mount?

Once you start mounting it and washing it the blood will come up. If you have most of it off, once you get it skinned out and washed a lot more of it will come out. The harder parts of the blood will soften up then use a soft bristle brush and it will come off. Wash it in dawn it will get a lot of the grease out...

Does salt water help remove the blood?

I have never tried salt water, I would think since it has salt in there it might dry the skin out as it is drying. If it is just washed a couple of times in dawn and water the blood will come out of it

Wash it in dish soapy water after skinning, it will come out along with the grease in the skin.
