Palouse Whitetails 2009
« on: December 21, 2009, 04:43:16 PM »
Well sorry its so late but I figured I would finally post the deer we shot during this season. This hunt was special because I took a good buddy along and he was able to harvest his first big game animal. I'll keep it brief but my dad, buddy and I snuck down opening morning into our usual spot and waited for it to get a bit more light. It was a little unusual because we hardly saw any deer the entire morning. At about 10:00am my old man was getting a bit restless after sitting for so long and not seeing anything so he decided to go on a little walk and push a bedding area. I tried to convince him to let me do the walking (its pretty steep ground) but he really wanted to get the blood flowing. I posted up on the usual outlook and waited. Sure enough about 15 minutes after his departure this deer comes clipping along at a good rate. I glassed him real quick, saw three points and decided to take him. I waited for him to take a broadside turn on the trail and then whistled to stop him. I knew I nailed him good by his post shot reaction, but decided to put another quick one in him since he was still walking. He didn't go very far after that one. Upon retrieval I was shocked at what a massive body this deer had. I've seen some pretty big deer come out of this area but this was the biggest for sure. The rump fat on him resembled a bear more than a deer. It was over an inch thick in some spots! Unfortunately I wasn't able to be there for my friend's actual harvest because I was trying to figure out how to get my deer out, but he actually shot the thing at about 2 in the afternoon. Patience was the name of the game with this one. I know the area pretty well, and I told him not to move from the spot I posted him in because at some point the deer will start moving through this terrain funnel due to pressure in other areas. Sure enough, my bud persisted and fought the urge to fall asleep just long enough to catch this guy coming over the hill . One well placed shot dropped this buck within 50 yards. Then came the hard part. Both were shot on a steep hillside and in my haste to leave late Friday evening I forgot my pack frames. Needless to say I will NEVER forget them ever again!

Negative, the old man went deerless this year! Its about time the guy didn't tag out. He was pretty generous this year because he worked that spot for me, which resulted in my harvest, and then he let my bud have the primo spot. Thats great about your daughter tagging out! That would be her first buck right?

Nice job guys. Some day I'm going to get a big whitey.
I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I'm not!
