Anyone had this Canon Rebel ??
« on: December 22, 2009, 12:08:28 AM »
I have an older (late 06) canon rebel I use the auto focus with the repetative (you would think after studying photograohy I would remeber the correct term for it but I dont) shutter feature to take multiple shots to get the best action shots of the horses. ANYWAYS my camera now will take one picture and then FREEZE and not allow anymore picutres to be taken...UNLESS it is switched back to amnual focus and then I can take as many as I want but once I switch it back to auto focus it goes back to the same problem.  I did a little reasearch and it appears that this camera is notorious for over time a part breaks or malfunctions and what happens is the mirror is actually getting stuck rather than clicking into place and then right back.  I am wondering if anyone on here has experienced this for two reasons I am wondering at this point with how old it is (old for technology anyways) to invest in fixing it (have not looked into the cost) or if I should get a new one and IF I DO get a new one has anyone experienced this with the newer models of the rebel because then I would spend a little more and get a nikon to avoid this default.  I dont mind manually focusing for single more "photographic"/artistic shots i actually prefer to go back to that but with the horse stuff its not about art its about getting a good action shot and for that I need auto focus and I need to take as many pictures consecutivly as I can.  We do reining and a split second can make or break the picture.  Any thoughts?

my wife has the 1st digital rebel...probably 6-7 years old  :dunno: and it has been flawless. 1 battery crapped out and thats about it. it doesn't do what a newer 20d will do but it's not too far and i imagine with a little of the custom work most of the guys do and a lesson or 3 it'd be taking some much better pics.

thanks for the input guys... we were at best buy tonight and I glanced at them breifly .. its just not in the cards financially right now.  I loved my camera and used it a ton... probably put about 15-20K pictures through it over time at various horse shows (i average 1500 -2500 over day at a show) and im not the hired pro there im just doing it for friends who want the focus on them. But i dont want to sink alot of money into something thats going to end up with the same problem

You can pick up a 20D for $300 ready to go, I paid $1500+ for mine when it was new.

With that many actuations, or frames, you may have just warn the thing out.  One quick fix would be to switch memory cards possibly.  I had a memory card that did that to my 40D.  It basically fires a pic then has to "reload" before it would fire another.  I switched cards and all was well.  Take it into a dealer or shop (probably after Christmas.  :)   )  and see if its an easy fix.

These cameras are designed for 100K actuations, at 15-25k its only a quarter of the way there and should not be close to being worn out. Sometimes things break, it happens.

Whitey, my camera dis that on occasion as well. I played with it and found that it wasn't the camera, it was the 18-55mm kit lens that it came with, the chip went bad. I can still use the lens but only wide open, if I try to stop it down at all the camera goes error99. Try one of your other lenses and see if it still gives the same code.

I had googled issues for my make a model and found about ten other people who all had the same ting.. one of them had taken it to a shop and that was how I came to the conclusion of the mirror but im not sure how it gets stuck on auto and not manual focus.  It could be my lens i suppose I only have one.  But the only time it happens is on auto focus if I switch it back to manual it works fine and it will do the continuous shots but its harder to get it in focus.  So I would rule out the memory card but lens could be it I guess.

Sounds like the lens chip to me. Do you have a different lens to try?

Tempting I'm sure Muleygirl but dont ever think that a digital zoom will have the image quality of optical zoom. For this you are always going to be better off with a DSLR rather than a point and shoot. People can try and twist it any way they want, when it comes to image "quality" a DSLR is the only real choice.
