Elk Shed Mounts
« on: December 22, 2009, 10:22:59 PM »
Hi guys my names Chris. I'm a new member to this site but Ive been following it for about a year and a half. Anyways I was wondering how you guys have gone about mounting elk sheds(if you have). Here's the first one that Ive done. I started with a 2X3 and cut it down to size then i made the base of the antlers flat so they would sit flush on the wood then i used epoxy to secure them together. I'm gonna sand down the edges of the wood and paint it whit to get a skull cap effect. Its not perfect but it will do for a first attempt :P heres some pics

great start on it, if you are wanting to take it further then there are a couple of things you could do. Make it so it is a little rounder and then fill it with foam or bondo and then leather it and mount it on a plaque.

Cool.  Just a suggestion for consideration...I have found that a lag bolt through the wood into the antler on the same axis as the main beam will provide good insurance against the epoxy failing over time.  I have used bondo and lag bolts with good success, even outdoors.  If you use a drill bit slightly smaller than the lag bolt (1/4" drill for 5/16" lag bolt, for example), you get a good bite and a secure mounting.  I've made ABS or PVC pipe risers off the wood to simulate the pedicle as well.  Once snugged down you can apply bondo around the bases and shape them just right.  Cover with buckskin and it comes out pretty nice.  Just food for thought.  I'm working on a set now so I'll try to come back and add some pics to clarify all this.
