Looking for a new varmint rifle.. Any Ideas?
« on: December 23, 2009, 09:28:29 AM »
Heading to Cabelas on Sunday to buy a new varmint rifle.  I finally have enough saved as I have been saving up my gift cards and have a couple cabelas cash cards that need to be used by Jan 3rd.  I think I will add another varmint rifle to my collection but not sure which one to get.  I have a 223 ar, and ruger 22-250 and a 204.  I have all the reloading components for these so I though I might double up on one of them.  But maybe a different caliber?  I have 3 boys and this year will be the first year all 4 of us go on the prairie dog hunt in Montana.  So I NEED another varmint rifle.   :chuckle:

What have you guys been looking at?  Any Ideas?

Maybe a 17 if you wanted something in a lower caliber or a 243 if you wanted to go into a higher caliber.  The 243 will also double as a deer gun down the road if you wanted.   :twocents:

Get the AR. Most fun and the kids will love it. Oooh and it is easy for them to shoot. Very little if any kick!!

I used to have a savage bolt action with a heavy bull barrel in .223... it shot dime sized groups at 100yrds with factory ammo and a small fixed power scope. I believe it was a model 110 or 112. i wish now i'd never sold that thing.

I believe he already has a 223 AR but I do have to say you can never have enough of them....

243 might be a good choice for them to later use during a big game season (pending your boys are youth).  Also the 17hmr would be a good gun for those plentiful Montana diggers.

I do already have an AR.  And I agree you can't have enough of them.

I thought about a 17.  Its definately a possibilty.  The only thing that bothers me with it is the limited range.

243 win, 6mm rem, 220 swift, 22 hornet and list goes on and on. Myself I think I would buy the 6mm rem or 243. Then your boys can use it to kill those pesky rats and a deer. Either way I dont they will care what they shoot they will just love going.

204 for the pd hunt, cheap to load for, great ballistics, low recoil and long barrel life if you don't push it.  Same can be said for the 223 only you give up a little on the longer ranges.  All makers make a decent rifle in these two calibers.  For the boys the CZ 527 Varmint might be just the ticket, a little lighter weight but enough to shooot well and a great trigger.  6mm and 243's will heat up a barrel pretty fast in a pd town and you didn't mention a need for a game hunting rifle.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I forgot about the CZ....  A friend has one.  I'm liking this option.  Loved the trigger when I shot it.

I do have a couple 243's that the kids use for deer hunting.  They would double for a pd hunt but are more expensive to load.

.17 HMR was blast to shoot this year. We shot for a couple hours and the heavy barrel was only warm when we were done. I topped the rifle with one of Cabelas PineRidge scopes designed for the .17hmr. Sighted it in at 100 yards and I dialed in praire dogs out past 300yards and had them rolling over backwards in the field. Savage 93R17F

I would say that if you don't by the .17 - you need to look for one of the existing cartridges you already have in a bull barrel should you not already have one.
