I thought sculpin until I saw legs, then I am like HANFORD sized pollywogs.   Talk about a meal.  I wonder if there were a bunch of them there.  I'd have never thought it in icewater.   COOL!

the pic i posted of the wog int he person's hand is specifically  a bullfrog tadpole...looks to be the right size i guess.

This is the photo I blew up for my brother for Christmas.  I framed it in a black wood frame with a creme type matting with black next to the duck.  I hope he is not a member.....

  Dude you're the master. Absolutely in credable pics!!!!! Yes those are bullfrog tadpoles. I can't believe there are some around at this time of the year. I take my son to a local pond in June where we catch them with dip nets. We put them in a bucket to check them out for a while then let them go. Great fun with the kids, and educational.

Doug you are the man, what an awesome set of photos. I would have never thought that there would be tadpoles or polliwogs this time of year. Perhaps they are so large they need the winter to mature? Just great pics and as always thank you for posting them .

Lots of correct answers here.  They are definitely bullfrog tadpoles, and yes, they do take 2 years to mature.  Those guys are sleeping through the winter in the mud, and will finish their transformation next year - if they don't get eaten!

I agree, bullfrog tadpoles.  I saw some in CA that looked like baseballs with tails and little legs.  The bullfrogs were enormous, though. 

By the way, if you ever get a chance to gig giant bullfrogs, go do it.  Take a 12 pack of beer, a spear and a headlamp - SUPER fun.  They eat good, too.
