My Moose made B&C - Almost!
« on: December 26, 2009, 04:05:14 PM »
My moose from this year was scored at 223 7/8.  It takes a score of 224 to make the all time B&C Book.  It does make the Awards level, but I think I am going to try to have it scored one more time, just to make sure.  I have accepted the fact that if that is the score, then that is the score, but I want to make sure.  I may never get any other animal even close to B&C, so I want to make sure on the score.  Either way, it looks awesome on my wall, tastes great from my freezer, and I will remember the trip forever.

I'm not sure what level it is at, but it scores a little over 494 SCI.

I will re-post when I get a chance, but I am at work today.  I posted them back in September, I think, under Two 60"+ Alaskan Moose-with pictures.

Warning - you can't have your animal measured twice by an official measurer.  You will not be eligible to enter it if you shop for scores.  Many people aren't aware of this rule.  If it was measured by an official B&C measurer, his score is your final net score.  Period.  Take it from me - I have a 350" caribou that misses P&Y records by 1/8".  I feel your pain but remember - the score is just a number.  Your moose is everything to you as it is, record books or not  ;)

Thank you.  I was not aware of that rule.  It won't change how I feel about the moose, but it would have been nice to make B&C.  Thanks.

Good save Bow4elk!!!   that would have kept you from even the BC awards.   I hear ya about making book, but your Moose is ALL THAT.

I would just hate to see an innocent mistake keep your moose out of the books.

Let me share a bit more information.  P&Y and B&C are not one-and-the-same, so I can only really speak for P&Y.  But the B&C Records Program is the foundation (framework) from which the P&Y Records Program was established.  In the formal training, it was emphasized that "score shopping", or the act of hunters seeking better scores by getting animals measured multiple times, is strictly prohibited.  Measurers who participate will lose their measuring rights for the Club, and hunter will lose Records entry for their animal(s).

To keep innocent and uninformed hunters from making this mistake, measurers are supposed to ask the hunter if the animal has been scored by an official measurer.  If the answer is yes, there are only two conditions that would enable the animal to be remeasured:

1. If the animal was measured before the 60-day drying period had been completed.
2. If the hunter witnesses sloppy measuring, he/she could contact the Records Office and report the situation.  in this case, the Records Office will determine the next steps, which could include getting a different measurer involved.

Hope this helps clarify.  Measuring will always be subjective.  Every measurer will vary depending on how meticulous and detailed they are in the process.  Antlers and horns can pose many oddities that require consulting the measuring manual or even contacting the Records Office.  I typically engage the hunter in the process of scoring their animal for two reasons; 1. it's nice to have more hands, especially on elk, caribou, and moose, and 2. so they can see and learn about the process first-hand and know the score is legitimate when we crunch the numbers leading up to the final net score.

I still need to get some info to the scorer for him to submit the paperwork, so I thought about asking him to remeasure the bases, as I think he may be off a little. (I believe, after reading the B&C website, you can ask for a remeasure by the original measurer, if you believe it was measured incorrect).  The more I think about it though, I think I will just leave it be.  I will be in the Awards Book (although I think I will miss the deadline for the next book, and have to wait another three years for my moose to be in), and it will not change how I feel about the moose, or the great memories of the trip.  If the original measurer "shorted me" a little here, he may have given me too much somewhere else, so it is what it is.

Thanks for all the comments and advice.  Now if I can ever make this trip again, it gives me something to shoot for.  In the All Time Book, or not, I know it won't change the taste.  And I have about 300 lbs in the freezer.
