Pope and Young official scoring question?
« on: December 28, 2009, 12:02:47 PM »
I was lucky enough to draw the Washington OIL moose tag this year and shot a good one.  Does anyone know if you can have the animal officially scored after it has been mounted?  The reason I ask-- I was reading the Pope and Young regulations on drying time etc... and did not see anywhere if you could have the animal scored after the taxidermist was finished with the mount.  My head is being done in Montana and I have no way to get the horns back to have them scored if I wanted to have it done.  Not a big deal, just curious.

Deke,

Yes, you can have your moose scored after it has been mounted, assuming the skull plate was not cut or broken.  It must me in tact and I'm assuming it is.

I'm in Olympia and I'd love to score your bull but after it's mounted, it will be difficult (at best) to move.  Your taxidermist will likely know of an official measurer in Montana who could do it there. Or there are other measurers around Washington who may be closer and/or willing to travel to your house once you get the mount back.  Go back to the P&Y web site and click on "find a measurer" to locate the name/number of the official measurers in WA.

Hope this clarifies for you, and congrats on your moose!!

Tom,

Thank you very much, that helps a ton.  I actually travel in the Olympia area quite a bit for work--not sure how easy it would be to get the head over with me but I may actually try.  I did see that there are a couple of guys in the Spokane area that are listed as official scorers (any chance you know them?), I may try to contact one of them.  The only reason I am curious is the fact that the minimum score for the Shiras is 125 and I tried to score the bull myself (and am sure that I did not do everything exactly right) and it was around 142.  Like I said, I am sure that there are things that I did not do correct, but at that, I would think that I was not off the difference between 142 and 125.
