My first and only elk
« on: December 28, 2009, 01:48:35 PM »
Here's a pic of my first and only elk I've killed. Short story on this one, it was a few years back. My buddy and I drew cow tags for manastash so we did some scouting (I had never been in that unit before). We saw lots of elk before the season got going so felt pretty good about our chances. Set up camp at tamerack springs with a few other camps around us. First two days....lots of hiking and no elk to be seen. That night around 12:00 or so the Drunkin camp just down from us decided to start shooting of their pistols.  >:( I wanted to just get the hell out of there but stayed till morning to hunt. We decided to go to a closed of road up from Buck meadows and hike in from there. Being unfamiliar with that area we waited till daybreak for the hike. Started the hike and after about 1/2 mile I stopped and told my buddy "something smells like a rutted up mulie". When I turned and looked at him I saw 3 cows coming over the top of a small hill right towards us. They saw us at about 80 yards away and stopped. Two shots..one from me and one from dirty gus and they took off sidehill to some timber. I noticed another clearcut past the timber. I ran up the road to get ba look at that clearcut and out they came. The lead cow stopped broadside to me at about 100 yards and I took the second shot....she stumbled and fell. I heard dirty gus shoot and turnd around to see the second cow go down and the third one going up over the ridge. We both filled our cow tags in that same clearcut.  :IBCOOL: with a short hike out. Went back to camp...packed our crap and left. I have not been back....too many hunters and morons for me. I have since been on a quest to kill a N.E. corner elk....less hunters, less elk but a lot more land. As it turned out both my shots hit the mark and were about 2" apart form eachother. It's amazing to  me how she could have gone  100 yards after being hit with a 7mm right in the boiler room. Anyways, it's the biggest elk I've ever killed.  :chuckle: :chuckle:
Just one more day
