looking at a new calling rifle, any thoughts?
« on: December 29, 2009, 06:12:34 PM »
I am thinking about a Howa 1500 Ranchland compact in 223. Anyone have any experience with it? I have an old Howa 1500 that I bought as a barreled action 15 years ago in 308 that I have had good luck with.

I like the factory camo, the short barrel and I've read so good reviews on the Nikko scope(I know I was surprised to) the package sells for about $550 plus shipping and trans fee.

looks like a nice rifle. not sure how your going to call with  tho? i guess you could blow through the muzzle and work the bolt but I'm not sure how good it will sound  :dunno: might want to stick with just shooting critters with it  :hello:

The right reeds will make it sound good.

Good point, I don't think I will get a good enough seal under the scope so I guess I will need to blow through the muzzle right. :yike:

i've shouldered a couple and i'm strongly considering buying one when i get my tax return, along with a couple others :IBCOOL:

those howa actions feel pretty slick, and they're the same as a weatherby vanguard...except less expensive and without the fugly weatherby stock.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

Looks like a nice rig.  My B in L keeps a Howa in 22-250 at my place so he can just fly out for a hunt without having to screw around with security at the airport.

I've heard that the scope is a pretty good one and popular down under.  Good range of power and nice FOV.

Have fun with it.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Make mine a Minaska

I bought a Howa 1500 back in november in 22-250.  Just got it putting good groups together last weekend as I hadn't had much time to shoot until then.   I am very happy so far with it.  52 grain berger on 36.5 grains of varget.
