Which Lens
« on: December 30, 2009, 05:59:19 PM »
I bought my wife a really nice camera for Christmas, a Nikon D3000 camera, a 18-55mm lens, and a 55-200mm lens.  What other lenses should I get her.  She'd like a nice telephoto lens, which one should she get?  She will be taking alot of outdoor and wildlife photos.  Any other gear you like?  Which tripod do you guys use?  Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Machias,
You bought your wife a Really Nice Setup! The 18-55 lens is a really nice, sharp as a tack lens, so she will be able to get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

The 55-200 is a great choice for a medium length telephoto. 200 mm. will reach out quite a ways, but it has it's distance limitations. Your wife will quickly learn those limitations and then she will find that with a proper amount of Cropping she will be able to capitalize on those short comings.

Long telephoto lenses are awesome to own, but man alive are they ever budget killers!  :yike: The Canon 400 mm. Fl/5.6 L series lens that my wife and kids ordered for me for Christmas was $1,200.00 :yike: and it does not have Image Stabilization, plus it is a slower lens. But that doesn't bother me because I have learned how to hold a camera steady by using what is around me as a prop. Plus, I have a darned good Tripod. :)

If you want to buy her more accessories, I might suggest a Good Grade Tripod, a Good Grade Monopod, a Good Grade Flash and/or high grade lens filters. Another thing that comes in handy is a Good Grade Camera Bag and/or Books on Photography.

Hey Fred, send Rico a PM and ask him what lens would be a good addition to your setup, I'm a Canon guy so I haven't had the opportunity to use too many Nikon lenses.

Rene, one thing you need to add to that EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM lens, and that's (IS) ;)

I have a cannon that I have a 2x doubler and I also have a trippler I use with my 80-210mm which with the doubler 2x give me 160-420mm. I have used both of them together but it take a good clear day with lots of light. Thats how I beat the bigger lens prices. With the 18-55mm and the 70-200 your wife has the full range she will need and a doubler or a trippler to me add to her arsonal without the big prices ;)
