After nine long years for a late buck tag
« on: December 30, 2009, 09:09:00 PM »
After a long wait I finally had received a late buck tag. My hunt was during the second week of November and unfortunately I didn't see any big bucks (a lot of two points and spikes and a couple small three points).
I spotted my deer with my spotting scope about a mile away. I could not tell how big he was because he was going up and over a ridge. I thought that I should take a closer look, so I proceeded stalking him for 45 min.  I came within 225 yards of him, but he was bedded down with 5 does and facing right at me in front of a bunch of sage brush.
There was not a lot of cover so I had to look through the sage brush to keep the deer from seeing me . I could tell he had good fronts so I decided to take him. I waited for about 15 min then I belly crawled over 15 yards so I could get a good rest. Then I kneed up and I could tell the deer started to sense my presence. Suddenly they stood up. I took my shot. The buck ran for 75 yards and fell. When I was beside him that's when I notice he had a broken antler.  A little disappointed at first but happy to take a nice buck.

The other cool thing was my dad took a bigger deer (scored 176 5/8) a year early to the day about 300 yard from my. I don't have any field picture of my dad's deer sorry.

Great hunt - way to get it done!  Broken points are a bummer but it just adds character in my opinion.  He's still a mature deer.

Nice bucks 8)
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.  That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Three great deer.  Congrats to the whole fam.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.
