Rimfire Scopes....Help

I need a scope for a Ruger 77/22 in 22 mag.  Any suggestions?  Should I buy a scope specifically for rimfire rifles or can I use a standard rifle scope.  I have two extra leupold scopes that I am currently not using.  One of them is a FX3 6x42 and the other is a VXII 4x12x40.  The VXII has the fine duplex crosshair which I would like to use for this rifle.  Is it necessary to use a scope with a parallax set for rimfire cartridges?

i decided you have to be pretty picky about parallax to let it bug you...that said, the crosshairs when you're looking at close range "rimfire" range(25,50 yards for example) targets will always be fuzzy using a scope designed for higer powered rifles. this may bug you. if you have a AO scope that'd cure it too. shotgun scopes work pretty well too.
i like mueller scopes for the rimfires. i have a BSA sweet 22 scope also that is pretty cool with the dial turrets.

 i put a cabelas rimfire tactical in 4x12x40 on mine . Its got adjustable turrets works for me.

 :)I have 2 ruger 10/22's both wear large rifle scopes. one is a leupold 4X fixed power, the other is a 1.5X5 variable, both work really well and have for many many years and are not blurry anywhere past about 5 feet away.

I used a Weaver K-3 with a dot for years for rabits and squirels back in WI and it was a big game scope , it worked great.  As long as you have the 6x42 there and your not going to have to put out anything to try it, hang it on the rifle and take it out.   The VX-II is a Adjustable Objective model and should adjust down to 25yrds so that one should work well.

I don't have a hunting 22 right now but use a 22Hornet for the same things and have a Weaver Classic VR-7 2x7x28mm rimfire scope on it.  Very nice glass for a
fairly inexpensive scope and the adjustments are spot on.  My 22LR Target rifle has a straight 15x and 8x32x40mm target scopes, for hunting I like big FOV and for targets I like X's.

Jackalope and Bofire make some excellent points.  I glossed over this and then it hit me that you've got a 22 MAG, so shots could certainly stretch beyond the 50yd line so either of the scopes you have would work well. Shots closer-in.. You could see some of that paralax. It all depends on your eyes. I have an inexpensive 6-24x50 with AO on a target rifle that is focused for the 50yd line only. I like it. With the advances in optics in the last 20 years I don't know that there's much difference in a rimfire or high power rifle scope. Old rimfire scopes were small tube, small objective low light units that could not handle the recoil of a high power cartridge. They are often lower cost. There have been advances to larger tubes, better glass and larger objectives, but I don't see any advantage of having one on a rimfire rifle save for a specific rimfire 'target' scope.

I use a leupold rifleman 2-7x33 on a browning T-bolt and it's very accurate .

The VXII that I have is an older model that I've had for years. It doesn't have the adjustable objective.

I put one of these (6-18) on my daughters .17hmr and was dialing in praire dogs out past 300 yards in Montana, it worked great. They have them for .22 as well.

he did buy my stainless one off me. That ones got a simmons .22 mag scope on it its an alright scope.

I'm assuming the scope phool is talking about is the Cabelas 17hmr scope.  BSA makes the other 17hmr scope.  I've had both, and the Cabelas is twice the scope.  As for the original post question, if you can afford it, I'd go with a Leupold VX3 in the 1.75-6x32mm.  I have one on a 77/22 and it's damn nice.

my 22mag has a fixed 4power x 32,I like the fixed 4 but will change to 4x40 the 32 just dont cut it in lower light
