I'm assuming the scope phool is talking about is the Cabelas 17hmr scope.  BSA makes the other 17hmr scope.  I've had both, and the Cabelas is twice the scope.  As for the original post question, if you can afford it, I'd go with a Leupold VX3 in the 1.75-6x32mm.  I have one on a 77/22 and it's damn nice.

my 22mag has a fixed 4power x 32,I like the fixed 4 but will change to 4x40 the 32 just dont cut it in lower light
