Man I really don't like the 308. Sure it's a good round but to me they kick just as hard as my 338 win. I hurt after putting a box though the savage I sighted for a friend, an the sps I shot wasn't any better. I've shot 50 rounds out of my 338 an not hurt like that. I'm going to take a friends 25-06 out an see how it kicks.
You should like the 25-06.  They dont have much recoil.

thats why you can handload them load them down i have never had a 308 but i have a a 7mm-08 which is just a necked down 308 to 284 cal "7mm" they don't carry to much recoil and preform well. but i cant see a 308 kicking that hard to compare it with a 338 win unless it has a steel but plate lol

this is a hard question for me to answer. To very different calibers that are be considered. To me it is very hard to compare short actions and long actions with different powder capabilities. Both parent cases are great and filled with history and both are great when loaded with good bullets. 25-06 you can obviously shoot larger bullets and the smaller ones like 100 grs it shoots about 200-300 fps faster. Tough one for me to compare them though. For large game I would definitely buy the 06 but for varmints I would buy the 243. The best thing to do is just get both and then you have two great calibers.

I'm think I will get a 243 later but the 25 just seems like a better all around cal
funny thing about what I said about the 308 is the guys with me thought the same. I think my stock makes a diff in the felt recoil.

Now you guys are making me start to second-guess my choice (and I was just about to order the gun this week).  Do you guys think a youth-model .308 is too much gun for a 10 year old?  He shoots my Rem 700 .270 Win just fine.  The recoil doesn't bother him a bit, but my full sized rifle is too heavy for him to pack and too long for him to shoulder.
I wanted him to have something that can stop an elk or a bear.

noway is it to much gun for him if he shoots a 270 win just fine. and if it is a bit hard kicking get the lighter loads or have some hand loaded for him and he will do just fine

I wish they made youth models in .270, I'd get him one of those, but they only seem to be offered in the short actions; .243, 7mm 08, and .308  He already has a .243, but I've never really been a fan of that round, besides, he's going to hunt elk next year, and I am not too excited about him shooting a 600 lb animal with a .243  I know people do it, but I just can't get used to the idea... especially with our long shots here in the Blues... :dunno:

i have 2 7mm-08 one in a weatherby cfp and just ordered a r-25 in 7mm-08 if it was me i would get the 7mm-08 before the 308 bullets from 100 grains to 175 well placed bullet will take any elk. i also know people that have shot many elk with 243's but its not for me.

Really?  What kind of bullet drop are you getting out of a 175 grain bullet at 300 yards with a 7mm 08?  Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't that basically a short-action .270?

like wazukie is right 100% match to the 308 but the neck is necked down to 284 die which is 7mm cal i have not shot the 175grains or plan to i use the 140 grain c/t for small game yotes and etc and with the nosler partition for a hunting bullet they will be almost the same as the 308 bal's wise just a little faster in most loads than the 308. i would not think twice about shooting a elk or bear with that cal and combo of a load.

One thing you could do is find someone that has a 308 an have him shot it. An a thought on the 270 find  a short barreled one an get a stock that will fit him. Have you thought at all about the 338 fed? Good round an An light load pushing 225gr accubond @2200 is 36" low at 400yds or a 180gr accubond at 2500 is 32" low at 400yds both with a 200 zero. I think it kick less the the 308 with the lighter bullets an with the lighter loads should be even nicer on the shoulder.02

25-06. My dad has greased a pile of whitetails with his 25-06 from 20 yds to 390yds.My opinion is it's the best non-mag. caliber made.
