One last trip to the east
« on: January 01, 2010, 08:37:05 PM »
My father-law and I are talking about heading over east of the mountains for one last trip till next season. Were talking about the sat. 16th since he has off that day. I was wondering if anyone has been having any luck in these ares?

Chelan Butte
Entiat
Swakane

Really hoping to get my 1 1/2yr old Brittany on some birds. I'm sure these areas have been hunted hard all season but was wondering if Any of you have had luck. Thanks

the butte is probably going to be hard to access, im not sure if the county or whomever is responsible for that road keeps it plowed or not.  i live 20 miles south of chelan and hunted the butte a few times this season.  they claim the state is still dropping pheasants up there but i couldnt for the life of me find them.  i also dont hunt over a dog.

friend of mine hunted swakane a few times this year as did i.  he hunts over a dog and limited several times, me and no dog resulted in long walks up the canyon.

i dont hunt the entiat for upland so i cant help you there

another place to look at over here is the quincy/evergreen wildlife area off of whitetrail road, i hunted that a couple times this year and had ok luck for quail and i know theres roosters there but may be hard to find this late in the year.

good luck
Steve

I am in the same boat.  I want to get my young lab over her first birds.  I'm debating spending the $$ for CC or Reds.  But was also thinking it would be nice to save the $$ and hit some public land.   I'm thinking about Sunday the 10th.

I hunted the Butte on opening weekend and got skunked, and my setter has a good nose, too. In late-November I hunted the Butte again from the west side (alt 97) and the snow was deep enough that I didn't want to take that small road up to the top. I ended up hunting the bottom around to the south and up that canyon, which actually looked pretty good.  Anyway, we never saw any birds there, either. It was a bit disappointing. I also hunted Swakane that same weekend and got skunked. I camped there and hunted it hard but we saw no game birds. Due to a bad back I hunted the lowlands and stayed out of the steep areas, except for that first canyon where the bird feeder and all the trash is. Plenty of quail tracks in the fresh snow around the feeder, but we didn't get into any birds. We hunted way up that canyon, too.

As of right now is there snow on the tops of those areas? When e went over about a month ago or so no snow but as we ended our day of hunting it started to snow. Never found any chukars but did find a good covey of quail we ended up putting up about a dozen singles.

as of right now yes there is snow in all of those area from bottom to top and there will probably be more snow to come. if you dead set on hunting the wenatchee area i go with swakane, i know there are birds in there just need a dog to find them.  everyone ive talked to that have taken birds out of swakane were hunting behind dogs and said even with dogs they were holding really tight.
