Right Equipment for Buffalo
« on: January 04, 2010, 02:25:26 PM »
I recently began checking into affordable Buffalo hunts near me. Have found several that I think I can afford. Am open to suggestions and recommendations also. Anyway my question: Is my current equipment significant for such a hunt..Not so much my equipment but my arrow rather..I shoot a Martin Slayer Pro Series..Its set at 69lb and pushes a 27 in 365 grain Ted Nuggent Goldtip 5570 at about 300 fps ..I shoot a 100 grain Magnus stinger 4 blade broadhead..Thought I'd ask on here as I've found that most people wont hold back and I will get an honest opinion on the subject...Thanks, Passin
P.S.
Not at all interested in using a firearm for this hunt.
Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me

Please forgive me for being a  :sas:
but they are bison.

Your equipment should work.

I know a lot of thoughts regarding light fast arrow vs heavy slower arrow when hunting. I would suggest using at least a 600 grain arrow for bison. :twocents:
I went along with a friend who shot a bison with a bow. Butchering it later really saw how thick, hair, hide, bone etc is on the animal and penetration is very important.

Number of articles on bowhunting web sites to get or make a heavy arrow.
Magnus is a good head or grizzly head is even more durable and better penetration. Maybe move up to 125 grains or grizzly makes 180 grain head too.

I am a big believer in heavy arrows and 2 blade heads for better penetration in larger game. 69 lbs should be fine as long is arrow is well tuned which I am sure it is.

Sounds like it should be a fun hunt

Is this a meat hunt, or are you going after a big bull?  Will probably make a difference.  A young heifer shouldnt be much harder than bringing down say, a big elk or a moose.  A big, old, tough, mature bull....?  Well, that may be a different story... :dunno:
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.  That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Excellent point!

Big bull: 10 grains per pound of draw arrow weight and single bevel, two blade broadhead, EFOC balance=sucess (oh yeah+close range)
Bring a buddy with a camera. It should be the "Hunt of a Lifetime".

Thanks for advise. Went by my local Bowshop yesterday to talk with my local expert. He showed me some inserts that he could insert in my arrows to bring them up to around 650 gr. I also looked at the 125 grain Magnus 2 blade. This is a meat hunt so the shot should be farly close. Gona work up a couple diffrent shafts and see how they fly..Again thanks for advise

Good suggestion. I would go with a 700 grain arrow minimum. At least 200 grains up front and a 60 lb draw bow. Word on the street is that they are not nearly as tough to penetrate as an African or Asian water Buffalo. A true Buffalo... Sounds kind of fun.

i would switch to a heavyer arrow for sure and get allot of wieght forward i would say 500 grains is what i would use and the arrow you have i think is the 5575 not 5570  i would switch to the 75-95 to gain the weight and go to a soild 125 grain head or bigger i like the 2 blade zephyr with a bleeder for a big cut on contact head that is my  :twocents: shoot them in the lungs and stay away from the front shoulder :yike:

Been getting lots of personal messages asking about the hunt I'm planning. Thought id post so all have info
The hunt I'm considering most strongly is in Mt.
This is the same hunt cohoho went on
A meat bull is $795 The guide takes u to area you shoot, they gut and load in your truck,
my understanding is for and additional $150 they will skin and quarter animal for you.
My local game processor said would be about .50 a lb to cut and wrap
At around 350 to 400 lbs of meat you would end up spending around $1200 + fuel/room/food/ etc.
for $3600 worth of prime eating when priced at Safeway  :cue:
I contacted this guide, it is Ted Turners ranch in MT. They are booked up for this year, but start taking bookings for next year in late Feb.

I have hunted there for the last 5 years.  It is going meat shopping with a weapon. If you are going with a bow you will be shooting from the back of a truck.  They will dirve you into the herd to get you set up for a shot. My friend got his last year with a bow in December.  It was about 14 below and snowing. As for skinning and quartering there is a person called Buffalo Bill that will do this for 65.00 and he is out of Boseman.  If you have any questions send me a PM.

Bring a GPS!  It's awkward to have to eat your buddies!
