Mauser.... but what kind
« on: January 04, 2010, 04:26:31 PM »
Last year I bought a rifle that i was told is a sporterized Mauser. Love the gun and it works great, but i'd like to know more about it. The only markings i can clearly make out are on the back of the bolt (facing the shooter) and it says Mark II. There are some random numbers on the action but hard to see it all without taking the scope bases off and i just got it sighted in so i dont want to do that.

What can anyone tell me about this model? What else could i look for to identify it?

Are you sure this is not an Interarms rifle?  They built some rifles on Mauser designs.  Their designations were Mark 2, etc..
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

Unaware of a Mauser MKII designation.

Are you sure its not a Ross 1905 MkII ?

Only other MKII I am aware of is a Lee Enfield however I doubt one would confuse it with a Mauser.

My first thought.
Never, ever let Creed hold you baby, it will ruin it and you will have to get another.

It's Chambered in .308, and the barrel is stamped as such, although with a different font than on the receiver so i presume not factory. There is also evidence of iron sights previously existing. The holes have been filled and sort or re blued.

On the left side of the receiver it is stamped 2U 564, and from under the front scope base the letters FAB are oking out.

It looks to me like it might be a model 93.  Pull the bolt out and see if it flat on the bottom.  Is the Mark II on the bolt or the safety.  I think there was an aftermarket safety that was stamped mark II on the back.  Does it cock on opening or closing?  I think that FAB is Fabrica de arma or some thing like that.  I have a 1916 spanish ovieda that says the same thing.  If it is be very careful.  Those model 93 weren't built to handle the pressures of the modern 308 round.  Some have been known to blow up.  Most of them were chambered in the 7X57 cal.  nice looking rifle though.

It's stamped on the back of the bolt near the safety. The bolt is not flat on the bottom from what I remember. I'll take another look tonight just to verify.

If it cocks on closing it's not a 98 mauser.  Pull the bolt all the way out of the rifle and look at the bottom of it and see if it's flat.
