I know people who have. They use old vietnam era night vision and said they would rather spotlight them.

yes but i still prefer spotlights unless there is snow on the ground and the moon is out and there is ambiant light to be had it is a bit hard to shoot past 100 yards with out the extra light.

You don't have the right scope. I have a gen 3 aries and can make out your face at 200 yards with no moon. The extra light makes my scope hazey. The darker the better. The IR is all the light I need..Dogs die around my house... No Q's asked...

How funny. Just got done getting my gear set up for tonight for them song dogs that wake me and the family up almost every night. I've whacked two in the last year from the door. One at night and other during daylight. When I use the spotlight they scramble like roaches, though I don't have a red lens yet?

I have a 3rd generation mono for my scope. its great, i have added a small steamlight to the mix and even though with your eyes the beam appears to be nothing, in the scope its like high noon to 400 yards almost, the yotes dont freak, just sit there looking at that tiny light. works great from the deck during calving.

jamng i had this scope for about five years and it very very expensive i don't even care to say and it was a gift to me and my dad. i have spent many hours hunting with it and with my friends that have other brands and i have used scopes from 800-several k shot them off 223 to 50 bmg and i have yet to see any that i could make out a face at 200 yards worth a crap.
i like gearheads idea i will have to give that a try for sure good thinking.

Yeah thermal is definitely better if you're not familiar. Night vision is great if you get comfortable with it but most people have a hard time adjusting.
If you're not looking to spend the $$$$ tho, spotlight is the way to go.
