Training books?

I know this has been on here before, but I am looking for recommendations on books for training a new pup for upland bird hunting, I just got a 7 week old German Shorthair/Choclate Lab and I would like to do some reading on training.

Gun Dog by Richard Wolters everyone else is just repeating his timeless teachings. there are also traing DVDs that I've heard are good. Guaranteed!

I have been spending alot of time over at the Versatile Dog website.  Lots of very knowledgeable guys over there.  They recommend "How to Help Gun Dogs Train Themselves" - Joan Bailey.   Not slamming in Mr. Wolters books but several guys over there said his stuff is quite a bit outdated and there are much better books and methods available today.  They also highly recommend this guy, Evans  http://www.rushcreekpress.com/page2allproducts.html

perfect start and perfect finish DVDs....  i am a delmar smith kinda guy... yes his book is from the 70s... his son has a good set of books out as well google team huntsmith... also POINT!  by a guy by the last name of Long... it's a good book as well....there are tons of good books out there...  i like to read everyone i can get my hands on and take from it the techniques i like.... so i have a mutt technique that works great for me!!!!  but checkout the DVDs from perfection kennels you really can't beat them for training your first  gun dog....

  Some might say it's outdated but I trained my choc. lab with that book and he turned out far beyond my expectations.  Follow that book and you won't be disipointed. By the time my lab was 1 year old he was already the best damn hunting dog I ever had. I don't hunt waterfoul so I went with the gun dog book. It is specifically for upland birds. Should work good for your GSP/Lab pup.

Thanks for the replies, I just ordered the Gun Dog, I also checked out versatile dogs, lots of good info there. This is not my first hunting dog, I just want to do it a little better this time. My current dog is a French Brittnay, he is pushing 14 years old and deaf, he has not done to well the last couple of years hunting but I still take him out so he gets to hunt, I just don't get as many birds as I used to.

You'll enjoy Gun Dog.  My wife got it for me for Christmas.  I just finished reading it and it is a great book.  I have a 4 month old yellow lab that I am working on gettin trained up.  Good luck!

I also picked up The Ultimate Guide To Bird Dog Training Jerome Robinson and also The Complete Guide to Bird Dog Training John Falk, any opinions on either? I will probably read quite a few and use some from each.

I highly suggest "The Art of Raising A Puppy" by the Monks of New Skete. This will give you a general idea into the pack world of dogs and how and why they act as they do. It was reccomended to me by my breeder. Another book I would highly reccomend is "How to Help Gun Dogs Train Themselves, Taking Advantage of Early Condtioned Learning" by Joan Bailey. Go to Amazon and type it in and you will find aquite a few books. Joan has a second book also.

Since you are going to be hunting upland you may want to check out NAVHDA. They have the green book that they use to go by for their hunt tests. It is called The Training and Care of the Versatile Hunting Dog. I haven't read that one, but heard it is good.

My father in-law gave me his book Gun Dog by Richard Wolters and I used it train my first hunting dog (brittany) who has turn out to be a great hunter for her first year out. I would also suggest George Hickox training dvd's these have also help me with using a lot of the newer style training like using a e-collar.
