I thought about this one time.  I shot a dink of a 2 point (back when it was legal) as I was headed back to school and wanted the taco meat.  He was at about 300 yards.  I start working my way over to it and I see another guy approaching.  He is humped up over my deer.  I walk up to it and he has put his tag on it, and says to me "better luck next time".  I turned and walked away.  If I'd have said one word I would have killed him.  I was infuriated.  I went back to Idabooners to take a breath.  I then went out and killed a way bigger buck, so I guess it all worked out in the end.

I would have shot him. If somebody points a gun at me or my family they better be ready to use it. I have a zero tolerance policy for that type of threat. The guy may be an ok person when he is sober but that was not the case. People make poor decisions when they are drunk. The story could have just as easily read " Drunk man shoots 11 year old boy" or " Drunk man kills father in front of son" IMO that family did the right thing and ONE less DANGEROUS and drunken fool is in the woods.

I hate to read about *censored* like this, it's just a damn deer, and now someone is dead.  Sounds like he got what he deserved.  Glad to hear no charges were filed.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

I hate to hear it too, but there is alot of emotion when guys are standing over a deer or elk....sometimes ego takes control. When the guns come out and are leveled... :dunno:

That's terrible for the kid having to see that. Glad the justice system did its part in this case and found self defense.  :bash:

That is FRICKEN insane. Like others, I feel bad for the kid. Bad situation all around....and to bad someone had to die over this incident, but with that said....If you gonna pull a gun and point it at someone, I guess you better be prepared to either use it or meet your maker.

I agree, bringing a gun to a gun fight, you have already ante'd in and you'd better be prepared to go all in.

Sad story, absolutely no good came out of that at all. I wonder who went home with the deer? :dunno:

Unless they're my camp neighbor or I know them. I try really hard not to go into anyone else's hunt camp. Bad situation this was.. But point a gun at someone.. Expect to induce some form of retaliation.

And yes, a person needs to know when not to hit the juice when there's guns around.

A little off the subject:

I was humping it back to the rig once at 2am ahead of my hunt partners that got separated earlier in the day. They weren't totally lost, we had radio contact for a little bit. We intersected the PCT and it was determined that since I was in the best shape (one was slightly lame), and ahead of them that I treck the next 8 miles to get wheels for when they would emerge from the woods totally exhausted. I had to cross a creek where the bridge was washed out. On the other side at the dead end road was an archery Elk camp of several rigs. Fire pit still had hot coals in it. I made noise as I walked through. I spoke loud enough to wake hunters, saying that I was just waking through to get back to our vehicle. "I'm not steeling anything" in loud voice as I walked through. One hunter jumped in his truck, caught up to me on the road and gave me a ride.

This can happen anywhere. This year I had two drunk idiot's try to chase me off my downed deer as well and reported it as well, in Western Washington. I nearly pondered quitting hunting deer altogether afterwards, it's just not worth it and being drunk is definitely not an excuse for that type of behavior, it's not even sane behavior for someone who is drunk and it apparently happens way too often. There were several hunting related murders in Oregon this year alone, at least three that I heard of.

sounds like there will be at least two less idiots in the woods. excuse me if i don't shed a tear for these morons

I thought only one idiot was killed?

im sure someones going to jail

Nobody is going to jail according to the article.  "The Grand Jury then handed down no indictments, concluding the actions of those involved in the death of Mr. Means were justified as self defense and in defense of another person."

Sounds like the guy that got shot was a loose cannon. I can't feel sorry for him one bit. It's just too bad it was somewhat hunting related.  Hopefully the kid doesn't give up hunting because of this, and realizes this was a freak situation.

There are definitely advantages to hunting with a partner or a group, this is one instance of that. I have no doubt if the dad was hunting alone at the time it would have turned out differently.

That is intense. I wonder what would have happened if the family was not armed?

Definately a sad story. Good thing there were others there, or yes, it could have turned out even worse.

One dead assbag was not a bad outcome to this incident.  The only mistake that appears to have been made by the Havlik party was for the first shooter to attempt shooting Mr. Means' gun out of his hand.  First shot should have been center mass.  Glad Means' bullet didn't hit anything important.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.
