I wouldn't waste the money on it again. Did it two years ago. Ironically the team that one it was from Warden and brought in twenty some yotes. Seemed fishy to me.

Yeah, we don't enter either, too much cheating.  The dogs are a little tougher around here(Moses Lake) this year too. Most days we've only seen 4-8 last Sunday we saw 14 but it still isn't what it usually is.

Yeah it was crazy. The pile at the end of the following day in that hanger was insane. Word was guys were running them down with four wheelers in wheat fields and blasting them with shotguns. Not sure if its true or not. There were sixty some teams entered that year too. Its one of those things that when good chunks of money get involved some guys can't stay honest.

We've seen over 30 in a day before with a pack of 8. We only took home 7 or 8 that day but we burned up a lot of ammo. :chuckle:

I know right. I think we saw maybe 5 yotes that whole night. Makes ya wonder how many those guys saw in 24 hours AND manage to kill twenty....Yeah, won't be doing that again. :chuckle:

It's kinda hard to compete with guys kicking them out of draws in the wheat fields and running them down on their sleds. That was 2 years ago.

I heard a little about that derby.  I know a guy with a dairy around there and said for 3 weeks before he had guys asking for any still born calves or dead critters.

Story I got was that they made multiple carcass piles in the wide open sage in areas they could spotlight easily and kept making the rounds.

I cant say what they did was cheating but I cant compete with 20+ dogs. They had bait stations, tons of private access, lots of snow and sleds. It was a perfect recipe for lots of dead critters. Makes it hard for the guys that are calling them. Ya gotta give it to them for whacking that many! The way its set up now is the biggest male is first prize, biggest female is second and most is third. Lots of raffle prizes too.

My buddy and his dad competed last year. They had 1st place with 17 dogs when a team rolled in with 20 or 21. Heard they were on sleds out on the YTC. They had a contract with YTC to control the coyote population and used it to their advantage. The warden derby is known for these types of competing individuals, makes it not worth entering.

Grant PUD had their own last year with a bunch of guys who work there. Winning team was 7 dogs.

They have changed the pay out since 2 years ago... last year they lowered the top prize for the most yotes from 500 to 300 and added the 200 the the biggest male and female... This year they are paying out 1st 2nd and 3rd for biggest male, female and most number of dawgs.... they are trying to keep people honest... I'll find out what the payouts are and let you know.... should be a lot better this year... I think spreading the payouts out Will keep any party hunting down... 2 years ago i missed the largest female by 2pounds and last year my cousin go the biggest female.... I thought it was a lot of fun... they give away a gift certificate for a rifle artwork and other hunting stuff. I think last year there was DUCK TAXI trip on the potholes.... and dinner after the weight in...

Where was that held woodywsu?

it was based out of ephrata? I had something come up at the last moment and couldn't go. The rules were teams with 2 and 3. If someone would like to put one on, I would be game on. Any of you ML guys up for it. Somewhere in grant county would be great. If it was before the Warden tourney, it would be better.

Are they offering anything more than (1) .17hmr per the winning team this year?  Also, are they making you bring in your yotes by the end of each day like last year?

[/quote]  That funny.  I asked Kelsey if we could bring our coyotes in every other day since we had a long drive, and he said "no".  That was before the derby though, so we got a refund of our money.

Hello all. I'm a new member to this site and a member of the Warden Lions Club.
I'm sorry to hear about all of the negative comments about our derby. We try and put on a fair ethical hunt.  We are one of the few derbys that actually have a permit through the WDFW. We ask that all the entrants follow the state guidelines of hunting. If you are ticketed by a game warden, you are disqualified. Special T has the details right about the new pay-out. Last year the winning team tagged 6 dogs for the win. It is ALWAYS a fun derby and the profits go to a great cause. I am a new addict to the site and will keep in touch.

The Wenatchee derby went back to simply 3 prizes for most dogs. Apparantly last year people were stuffing dogs with lead pellets, soaking them in water... all sorts of stuff to get the heaviest dogs, so they decided it just wasn't worth it if people were going to enhance their animal's weight. Too  bad, I thought it was a great idea. While I know I wouldn't get the most animals.. I  still know where I could have at least found a few big dogs.
I am not opposed to golf, for I suspect it keeps armies of the unworthy from discovering deer.

It never fails.  Someone trys to put something fun together with some nice prizes and you always get a few *censored* bags that spoil it for everyone else.  Some people just can't do anything legit.  Sad!!!

I heard the derby they did last year in the Satus area the winning team was turning in snared dogs too.  Come on, that's just lame.  I think some peoples over inflated ego dictates their better judgement.
