Friggin Thieves
« on: January 10, 2010, 09:42:02 AM »
Been to pissed to post but have finally cooled down a bit. Went to fetch our treestands and check the trail cam @ the end of the year and everything had been stolen. Trail cam, three stands and all the steps!!! This is a great Blacktail spot that we thought was pretty secure. I guess we were not sneaky enough on public land and were observered by some bottom feeders that were to friggin spineless enough to buy there own equipment. *censored*, I hate having to watch my back on public land  >:( Maybe its just as well as I did not purchase my thief tag for 09!!!!!!! Anyone else notch a thief tag this year!!!!!!!!!

Damn, you got robbed badly.  It's one thing to loose a single stand or a trail cam but all that?!!  Furious doesn't even begin to describe it.  Sorry for your loss of gear.   >:( >:( >:(

I hear if you place a pit with punji stakes right in front of you trailcam that it is real easy to fill it in when needed.   :chuckle:  :chuckle:  Plus you get the bonus utube video of their eyes getting huge as they drop out of sight.

i cant believe another hunter would ever steal someones tree stand. It seams like ethics and respect for other hunters have gone away or never existed for some people. These are the same kind of people that are taking shots on animals they should never be trying , just to see if maybe the could "hit it" , and leaving there garbage all over the place , making ALL OF US look bad, just to name a few things. I had a 2 man ladder stand stolen from a spot about 1 mile behind a locked gate east of Granite Falls this year, i thought if another hunter would have found it (it wasnt that hidden) they would just use it and not take it.I think i am glad that i did not catch them in the act , cause i honestly dont know what i would have done.

Stealing money is bad enough.........

Theivin the way a man makes his living (tools) or way he keeps sane (hunting/fishing gear) will earn you a special level of hate, and an especially warm place in hell.

I got waxed for six rods/reels on New Years morning one year, while eating breakfast. In that heist, my 94 year old pard lost rods that he had made 30+ years ago. Painful.

I know the feeling. Burns sometin fierce.

If I had caught the guy with my rods that morning, I have the feeling I would still be in the clink.
..............as always, offering sobering truth.

Man that sucks....sorry to hear that 300bull. When ever you put a stand up (privite property or public) and leave it up without being there you take a chance on losing it. I have a metal tree stand I leave up all year on privite property. If you look hard enough for it you can see it from the dirt road. (It's way out in nowhere land) And I know that is the chance I take.     I hate frikin thieves.  >:(

I wonder If my stand is still there?????????  It's 334 miles form my house.  can't just run there and see but I'm thinking a trip is in order.

I feel for you man, sucks.  I had my tree stand stolen and it had been in the same spot 100 yards off my parents property for 3 years.  Think I know the guys that took it, my buddy had seen them in the area and they were acting suspicious when he talked to them.  Hope I see them come back next year, freaking punks.

Now I know this mught not work, but here is something that i did in California, my truck used to get broke into at least once every 6 months and they stoled the radio every time.

About the 5th time it happened, I superglued razor blades to the back of it, came down one morning, truck door was open, looked inside the stereo is laying there half out of the dash, lots of blood laying there also, was a nice blood trail to follow about 5 houses down.

So maybe if we booby trap the cameras these pieces of crap will get the message.

Sorry for your loss..

I have also heard of people placing a second less expensive trail cam up in an adjacent tree pointing at the base of their tree stand.  :dunno: 60 bucks seems to be a cheap price to pay to get some photos of the *censored*s that stole your stuff.

*censored* is a new word for me...saw it used on another post and it seemed appropriate to use here. I FRIKIN HATE THIEVES  >:(.

NW Brew, I also have 3 stands in E. Wa. that have been up for 6 years. I have to go back every year and re-insall the tree pegs to keep the bark from growin' around 'em. They are on some private and some public. I just can't imagine a hunter of any kind stealing these tools. Then again these bottom feeders can't be real hunters or sportsman or men at all as they would realize the time/effort involved in scoutin', placin' and purchasing. It just dawned on me, its Al Qieda

Sorry to hear that man!  Too bad it isn't legal to booby trap your stuff.  I have a friend who put some of these stickers on his trail cams that are in Capitol Forrest and hasn't had one ripped off yet.  He does have pics of guys looking at the stickers and cams real close before walking off.

I caught a van load of brush pickers trying to steal a trail cam I had out.  Luckily I could see the camera was gone and was able to block the road with my truck.  After the cowards lied to me for an hour they finally gave back my camera and left.  Those brush pickers are every where these days.

Blackbearkiller.....I have done the same thing back in high school and it worked just like yours did.  BUT!...before people start booby trapping evrything...there is a state law against booby traps. You are setting something up with the forethought of causing bodily harm. That is a felony. I know it pisses everybody off when they get ripped off. But if you have a case and a perp, then officer finds out you set a booby trap....you get in trouble. Don't get me wrong. You gotte do what you gotta do. Just know where you stand with the man. Ignorance in a court of law is no defense.   :yike:

Sorry for your loss, I had my bow/pack stolen out of my cherokee 2 weeks before the end of the 08 season. Thieves are the main reason I have been holding off buying and hanging trail cams.

Haven't had anything taken in the woods, yet...real nervous about it, hate leaving my Jeep parked out of sight...

When I was 8 or 9 our house was robbed while we were in B.C. on Summer vacation. They got a side of beef, my lawn mowing for a new bike money (65$) my 1st .22, had it for maybe 18 months and a bunch of dads WWII souvenirs.

What really pissed me off and still bums me out? They took the .22 Grandpa gave dad when he was 10. He was 42 when it happened. He had spent 40+hrs the previous winter handrubbing Linseed Oil into the stock, man it looked good.

 >:( >:( After a great trip to Montana some years back, my two hunting partners were taking their meat to Frances to have sausage made (two coolers full) on the way down they decided to stop and fish the Willapa for steelhead. When they came back up to the truck, the two coolers were gone. It's a good thing they didn't catch them in the act or I could guarantee they'd be floating face down in the river.

Wow, no kidding? That would really suck.

I watched someone park their rig next to mine way out in the woods once, I immediately dumped my orange vest behind a log and binoc'ed him from probably 500 yards.... The guy got out and glassed the area maybe six feet from my canopy on my truck. He then left. I saw him in the next drainage glassing for deer in multiple areas. I was just spooked from it as I would never approach someones rig unless I needed help....

I caught 2 thugs hunting on my private lease this year.  One had taken a doe (Buck Only area).  I watched them from a distance got the sheriff on the line. He met them at the gate Posted no hunting/trespassing. Hit them both with a Big Game violation #1.  I filled trespass charges on them both since I lease the land.  They are thieves in my book.  I worked hard to get that lease in a great area.

Anyone know if I get points on the weighted scale for catching a poacher?

Insulate your doors from the rest of the rig and hook a power inverter or battery powered fence charger to them.  Have a hidden disconnect switch so you can disable it when you need in.  Park over a mud puddle or damp ground, sit back and watch the fun!

I wonder if anyone makes a small tracking device that you could put in your tree stands/trail cameras that would be cost effective? I heard that shipping companies are using RFID tags to track where delivery trucks are going. Maybe there is something similar that we could use to track down stolen equipment? Or would it be too expensive to put these on stands/trailcams?

I looked for some tracking devices like that for a past employer and nobody has anything like that. The ones the security stores and the police use only send a signal when it leaves a certain radius. I think it would be so much nicer if you had one that would give a signal on command.

We have something like that on our Company issue BlackBerrys. When the GPS app is on the Boss gets an alarm if we cross a given "fence line" in an assigned time slot. Example, if a driver starts their route too early or goes to far out of their patrol area the boss gets a page. Or if we park for longer than 35 minutes (5 minutes over break time) It can locate us to within 9 feet.  Kind of Big Brothery but if I fall down a stairway or get jumped and lose the fight someone will come find me.

Maybe there is a market for something to make your treestand impossible to collapse/take apart?
