Ruger Blackhawk Convertibles
« on: January 08, 2010, 11:34:21 AM »
I'm kickin around the idea of maybe getting one in 45 long colt/ 45 auto.  Any of you own one?  If so what are your likes or dislikes?  I think it would be a fun little shooter with the 45 auto cylinder in it.

I do not own one. I did however get to shoot one in 45LC and it was one of the most fun handguns I have shot. The owner had cowboy action loads and it was super accurate and very little recoil, about as much as the single six in 22wmr. Other than my personal experience with that one gun I have nothing else to offer but it really made me want to buy one and am still looking.
Never, ever let Creed hold you baby, it will ruin it and you will have to get another.

I have a Ruger Blackhawk in 45Colt.  It is a great revolver.  I reload so it makes it cheap to shoot.  If you don't reload going with the convertible would be a good idea so you can shoot 45ACP.  It is a lot cheaper and easier to find.

I picked one up a few weeks ago for $325 (LNIB :IBCOOL:)

I'm going to finally go out and shoot it today. To me it just looked like fun. Ammo and components for the 45ACP are cheap and plentiful, so it's a good caliber for high volume shooting. The 45 Colt is powerfull enough to get anything done. Now I can plink with the cheap 45 ACP cylinder, and have the option of moving up to the more potent 45 Colt when I need a little extra power.  All of this without the need to learn two different triggers/guns.

Of course some people will tell you that if you handload, the extra cylinder is unnecessary. But the light load/heavy load cylinder swap rational is what convinced me that I needed this gun, so don't ruin this for me! ;) Plus, now I can load up 300gr XTPs in the 45ACP. Sure it will only move them at 600FPS, but they sure will look cool. It is funny though that I wouldn't own a 45 ACP in an auto pistol, but the first time I saw one in a revolver I had to have it.

My Blackhawk looks like it's going to be a real shooter. With the 45 Colt cylinder and a plinking load of 5.5gr Trail Boss under a 300gr cast bullet, all 6 shots were inside of 1.5" at 25yds from a rest. The 45 ACP with a 200gr HP over 10.5gr of Blue Dot shot just as well, but about 3" lower. With a little work I might be able to regulate a load for each cylinder that will be on at 25 yds.

My only complaint about it is with the 45 ACP cylinder. The chambers are all very tight. My full length sized brass needs to be pushed in pretty hard to get it in there all the way. When ejecting them, they just fall right out of the cylinder though. But it doesn't appear to be a problem with factory ammo. It may be a problem with my reloading dies. Sized brass comes out of the die measuring .473" at the case head, while factory ammo measures closer to .472". So either the chambers are cut to minimum dimensions, or my dies are cut a little large. I'll just try polishing the chambers and see if that helps.

I can't belive I waited this long to buy a Blackhawk! I've had a 45-70 BFR for a few years and love it, so I thought a Blackhawk would make a good small scale companion to the BFR. I've just been holding out for the right deal on the right gun.  This was probably one of the best purchases I've made in a while.

Thats great and its a good lookin gun also.  Rose wood grips sure look nice.  A lot better than the black rubber grips their putting on them now.

Yep!  I've owned probably a few hundred over the past 35 years.  Now I happen to have a terrible bug I've seem to have caught, original Ruger Flattops in .44.  If you catch this horrible virus, prepare to never be cured..... It can only be held off by the occasional purchase of more and more Flattops ;)

Lessee...have a few 45LC/45ACP combos, 38-40/10mm combos, .44 mag/44-40 (.429 bullet), 32 mag/32-20 and of course .22LR/>22 Mag and a custom .22 Jet/.22 K-hornet that is off being finshed up...plus a soon to go to the smith .25-20/256 win mag/.25 Hornet combo...

This one is my packer for woods bumming...
Beater Ruger 45 LC/45 ACP
Stainless gripframe and steel ejector housing and a Super Blackhawk hammer. Its pre-battered so I dont feel bad packing it into NASTY places.

So yeah they are a hoot...the .45 cal ones are VERY versatile, I'm cutting one of the ACP cylinders so i can use .45 AR as well one of these days.
A Smith & Wesson Beats Four Aces.
