rubber muck boots love-hate
« on: January 12, 2010, 07:16:32 AM »
Just curious to what you guys think about muck boots. I love and hate mine, they are the most comfortable boots around if your not hiking big country. The biggest problem i have is my feet sweat so much in them that i end up with wet feet anyway :bash:. Do you guys that wear these type of boots have any secrets on how to keep your feet dry??? Thanks

Impossible. Like with waders, plan on wet IMHO... I just make sure I have no cotton socks on, stick with poly...

I have the muck boots (chore)  I love them.... and yes my feet do sweat... i think the only way to solve that is to wear them in a colder climate  :)  they are pretty heavy as well....  i don't think you can get away from it unless your hiking in the arctic circle

You guys are quick, thanks for the info. I figured i wasn't the only one with sweaty feet, sounds like socks will help but prob will always have wet feet. Even when i sit in my stand in late december my feet sweat in these boots. Thanks again.

The issue with Muks over "rubber boots" is the neoprene. Wicking socks or not, Muks make your feet sweat bad. Comfy and warm, but no comparison to rubber.

I got away from the wetish feeling of waders by getting breathables.

Muks are awesome, but your feet do come out damp. Wicking socks are your best bet, but only to a point. I think part of the problem could be minimalised if the Muk's were looser around the calf. Mine kinda seal on my leg. A looser top could help air transfer.

Anybody with pencil calfs not have a problem with Muks?

I sweat a little but I bring at least two changes of socks and that seems to help. You have to remember also that I only have one foot so it only bugs me half as much.

I rub anti-perspirant stick all over my bare foot, use a poly sock liner, then wool-blend sock.  Makes a big difference.  Used to have to change socks after four hours now I can go all day.  Haven't used muck boots though but Schnee's.

I really like the wool-blend socks (winter weight) from Cabelas; seem to help feet stay dry and warm by moving the moisture away.  I wear them in my Lacrosse boots (just like Mucks) and they are comfy.  Never tried doing a long hike like that, but have worn them a couple hours doing yard chores or playing with the kids in the snow.

I also got similar socks made by LaCrosse that I picked up at the Danner store.  I'm a big fan of the wool.  I wear them at work now too (10 hour days in boots, but more regular type, Danners).  Even in the summer, I think thick wool socks are the best and keep my feet comfy.  Dry = comfy, whether warm or cool. Think I paid about $12 for either brand.

Wicking socks are nice but throw some antiperspirant in there as well.  Where I archery elk hunt I wear mine all day.  It is also good to have an extra pair of boots to alternate.
