So I'm looking into possibly buying an AR.  Haven't done too much looking yet, but what a reasonable price for a good one?  Any good/bad stories from owners?

Its all a name game. oly makes some very nice shooting guns but got a bad rap years ago. depending on what you want 650-1500+

For a good "affordable" AR, take a look at Stag Arms and DPMS.  I shoot DPMS and am very pleased with their ARs.

DPMS is the way to go with a budget in mind they make good guns. allot of my friends shoot them i am a bushmaster guy myself but my new R-25 that is ordered is by remington but dpms makes them for remington. and bushmaster makes the R-15 they are all owned by the same company can't remember the name for sure.

AR's come in a lot of different styles.
You can get a quality, basic, ready to roll for $600.
You can double that for a long-distance one-holer.
What style/purpose are you considering?

Oh I'm an assault rifle kind of guy.  Got to play with a whole bunch of cool guns workin at the Army depot  .  I've got a tactical SKS already, but want to get somethin that would be more suitable for coyotes.

After a lot of research, I bought an Olympic Arms K16 off of GB for $630.  It was slightly used, but they can be found new for under $700.  With shipping and FFL fee, I got mine for $675, or $125 less than can be found locally, before tax.  Add another $100 for Bushnell Banner dusk and dawn scope and $50 for rings, and I'm shooting .223 for $825.  It's got a stainless steel bull barrel, and the previous owner was nice enough to have replaced the A2 stock with a collapsible one.  I got it to shoot varmints, and am not going to be busting down any doors in the near future, so don't need top of the line.  From what I hear, Oly arms supplies some of the other names with their hardware anyway.

It shoots great, and is solid build.  Take bad Oly arms reviews with a grain of salt.  Almost all of them I saw were of three kinds.

1) No first hand experience, but have "heard" things third hand.  "My brothers friends cousins buddy has one, and he doesn't like it because..."
2) They had one that had a cast receiver, which isn't as good as forged.  Oly arms hasn't made a cast receiver in 15 years or more.  Unless someone digs one out of a dusty basement, your not going to get one that's cast.
3) "The customer service sucks."  This is the hardest thing to go by.  This can be for arbitrary and petty reasons.  I've had nothing but good experiences with them, all be it very infrequent need to contact them.

You won't find a better shooting AR...really.

Build one.  You will probably learn something, and it's a lot less expensive.  Don't be afraid of the complete Model 1 sales kits either.  They make dependable uppers that shoot, and you can get any combination of upper receiver, stock, barrel length, handguard, etc.  Just find a stripped lower, buy the best trigger you can justify, and put it together.  It's a blast!

take a look at model 1 sales they have some good guns.  thats where mine is from and it shoots great.  prarrie dog hunt with it every spring and shoot out to 600 yards with it.

CMMG Bargain Bin is pretty amazing.
I showed that to a guy a few mos ago and he bought one....couldn't find a scratch.
