To the gunsmith I go
« on: January 14, 2010, 07:34:11 AM »
Taking my encore to the smith tonight after work. I'm getting the Vias brake installed on my 300wm barrel and some trigger work done and then some little stuff. The barrel has a brake now but it looks like crap and looks very cheap. I guess I just don't like the look of it. The Vias brake gets great reviews and is said to be a little quieter than others.

It's the first time I've ever had any smith work done on any of my rifles and I'm looking forward to the end result. If it shoots better when i get it back, I'll be amazed. It shoots pretty dang good right now.

change of plans on the brake...gonna go with the Defensive Edge brake instead of the Vais. It's not ported on the bottom so it doesn't kick the dirt and stuff up like the others. They're both good brakes, but he talked me into the DE instead.

Never heard of the defensive edge,do you have any pics of them?I am sure it will compare, what are the cost of them compared to Vais. Thanks
I really like my Vais and I don't notice dust or anything blowing when I shoot :dunno:

Is it really worth it to put a muzzle break on? My 300wm kicks like a mule but I am just nervious it is tossing money out for something that will blow my eardrums.

I can't speak to Defensive Edge, but the Vias didn't seem any louder with the break on or with it off, and had a 30-40% reduction in recoil on 300 RUM.

I think it all depends on whether you want to wear ear protection while hunting.

That is exactly what Iam talking about. It takes a while at the range every year just because I have to make sure I ride the gun just right or I wind up with a brused shoulder. It would be nice to have a better time on the range but when I shoot an elk i will be shooting untill he is down and I doubt I will have earplugs in.

you can always site in with a break on the gun and ear protection and then put a solid sleeve over it for the hunting application.  Most gunsmiths make sleeves, so that you don't have to wear the break during hunting applications.  They screw on and off just like the break.

this is JoshT's sendero with a Defensive Edge brake on it. with a firewall at work that blocks firearms related sites, it's the only pic i can find.
i found that my gun is not very loud at all to the shooter(it has a brake on it now). no louder than my 30-06 without a brake. i have shot it with and without ear protection. i have also been standing next to it without ear protection on when my pard shot a coyote with it, and didn't notice anything obnoxious out of it. the recoil reduction makes it worth it to me. i might call myself recoil sensitive i guess.
i'm replacing the brake i have now for the simple reason that it is ugly and doesn't match my gun's finish and I have some christmas $$ to spend. iknow maybe not the best reason, but it is what it is.

I think you made a good choice Jack. I had a Vias on my old 338 RUM years ago, was not impressed, with either the recoil reduction, or the ear splitting boom it produced. Make sure to post the results on your DE brake. Later

Almost all of the benchrest guys go with the Vais brake, the recoil reduction on my
300 win was a drastic reduction and I don't think it is very loud at all, look at how they are designed, with holes coming out the front, lots of the sound and blast are going forward!Best design IMO.

My 300 WM with a DE brake.......It is a great brake.   Good choice, Jackelope.  I am pushing 190 Bergers pretty hard and it kicks like a *censored* cat.

No fluting. Fluting brings me back to another post you made on this topic the last time we talked about this...regarding a pro hunter barrel is .260 or the like. I decided I would probably want a smaller caliber barrel at some point so when I do I will go with a Pro Hunter barrel that will already be fluted. That will be my move towards a lightweight barrel for this rig. The smith wasn't comfortable fluting this barrel because of pressure concerns, said it could be done but they'd have to send it out somewhere to be done and I didn't want to do all.

I understand.  Well, if there's a day when you want that one fluted. There is a guy in Puyallup that does it.

Get a scope on that thing and go shoot!

Update!!!
I got everything completed and back together yesterday. The Encore frame with the trigger job right about 3.5 pounds, the 22-250 barrel on it, and the 300 win mag barrel back with the new Defensive Edge muzzle brake installed. Also had him order me a Tally 1 piece for the 300 barrel and install and boresight my scope since he had it.  The work was done very clean and it looks real good. When I get some pics taken I will post them up.
Thanks for all the input.

I finally got my 30.06 back yesterday. Went to the range to test it out and it is touching each shot at 100 yards. Love it. Trigger down to about 3 1/2 pounds, new bedding, recrowned and a few other things. It is dead on. Love it and love SpotonSmithing. Great shop and a couple of really good guys (from the little time I have talked to them).

Need gunsmithing, go to SpotonSmithing. Great prices and great work!!
