Moly Coating Fouling

just curious how many shots it requires to "moly foul" a rifle barrel.  ive read numerous articles that claim anywehre from 10 to 40 rounds.  whats everyones experience with moly/coated bullets?

I've never heard of "moly-fouling".  I didn't think it was possible as I had heard that it's very similiar in chemical composition to teflon.  The coating on the bullet should allow it to slide out the barrel easier, and the hot gases behind it should burn off any residue left in barrel.  I'm going to have to research this further, as I've been using moly coated bullets for years, and after several hundred down one particular barrel, I've noticed no change in accuracy. Could you let me know where to read these articles you were reading?  I'm very curious now.

i cant exactly remember where i read it, it was late and i was clicking on random links from google, all of which were credible and respected shooting sites one was midway usa's faq page.  but basically what i have come to understand is that each time you fire a coated bullet, ie moly or lubalox or etc, a little bit of that coating is transferred from the bullet to the rifling of the barrel.  so for instance in a new barrel, such as my case, if i shoot a coated bullet it will coat a little bit of the barrel and as i shoot more coated bullets it will eventually coat the entire barrel.  but i will not see the benefits of shooting coated bullets until i shoot enough of them to coat the entire barrel.  and since the bullet is traveling from a coated section of barrel to a noncoated section the differing friction coefficients ever so slightly skews the rifles accuracy.

I heard that some match shooters were having issues.  I imagine that, with a coating, it's possible to have build-up/fouling over time.

i have never had any problem with any of the coated bullets that i have shot. just clean my gun like normal and never seen anything to say bad about moly bullets

I'm not sure what your asking. How many shots to coat a clean barrel? Or how many shots before you need to clean?
I shoot moly in my high volume shooters, 22-250, .223,257WBY, etc. I only clean those rifles once a year, that is over 1000 shots out of the 22-250. I always shoot 10 rounds through a clean barrel to lay down some moly. Shooting over a crony, you'll see the velocity decrease a little each shot as the barrel gets slicker and the pressure goes down.

I read lots of stuff on this an it seems that a dirty bore is actuly more consistant in mv an there normaly more accurate. The need to scub a barrle clean after x amount of shots is a myth. The biggest thing you need to do is keep the barrel from rusting by running some patchs with lube on them though the barrel.

that all depends on the barrel. true on a chrome line slick bore, not so much on a rough rifled bore.
