Problem with black lab and other dogs...

So my female lab is about 11months and I've been doing some basic retrieving and bird training with her. Shes pretty good at her basic commands such as sit, stay, come, kennel etc. She is also getting good at retrieving in general and I have taken her on a few duck and quail hunts.

My problem is whether were training or just going for a walk she gets really wild if another dog comes around. When this happens she just goes wild trying to play with the other dog and totally ignores me and any command I give her. Basically when this happens I have to just call it a day and leave because it wont be productive anymore. So does anyone have any ideas of things I could do to get her better about this? I know this could be a huge problem if I'm out hunting and we run into other hunters and their dogs. I'm also planning on introducing her to an e-collar soon but I dont think it will neccesarily fix the problem. Is this normal for a dog her age? let me know if you have any suggestions

try to make your self more interesting,toy or a snack..plus its still a pup...

The collar would help too. Get one with adjustble power and use a low setting. The biggest thing with the collar is you have to be consistant. If you only shock half the time the dog is acting up- you are not helping. Also shocking too much will ruin the dog. It is a very fine line but if used correctly, it works great.

allot of it is the pup in her i had the same problem with my lab sisters that i kept i never should of kept 2 out of the same litter i know better than that when i would be out working with one they would always be looking for the other one stoping lisening it got to were i had to leave the house with one at a time to work with them. but as they got older they stoped caring as much. another thing is to distract the mind walk her around other dogs if she fights to try to see them break her consentration and focus in the other dog by touching her kinda like the dog whisperer does. if that does not work when she gets worked up put her on her  back and hold her down untill she loses intrest in the other dog but remember she is still young and it will get better the older she gets.

A e collar will fix it. Both my labs did the same thing and when i hit them with the e collar for not listening to me, they changed there tune 


The first time i did it to my first lab, the next day he saw another dog and looked at me before reacting with the look of, "what can i do". I called hima nd he came to me, nevering have another problem again.

Do you train her with other dogs?  Has she had to deal with the frustration of watching another dog work?  I do a lot of my training solo, but when I can, I hook up with my trainer and train with at least two other dogs.  This not only helps with socialization, but teaches my dog to deal with having to sit there and watch another dog work, "honoring" it's called.  (BTW, he's horrible at it, but we keep working  )

thanks everyone, one problem has been a certain dog who is actually a yellow lab that my neighbor owns. I have some property out behind my house and the neighbor dog always comes to try to play while where training. He just jumps his fence when he hears us out there. A few times I have actually put a leash on the other dog and stepped on it to keep him still (he is only about 8 months/ yellow lab but really large and energetic). But this has seemed to work, also I have put my dog on leash and thrown some retrieves for the other dog to keep my dog more focused on retrieving. But as you can imagine this is a very physical job to try to keep 2 young labs at bay.

But I will try to just keep working it out with her and maybe practice with other dogs if I can. I figured its probably still a maturity thing with her still bieng a pup. Also I have not had her spayed, that could have something to do with it. And once I can afford it, I'll probably get her on the e-collar to fine tune some of her training.

The e-collar would definitely help, just use it appropriately.  Also try to get her around other dogs as much as possible so she can become socialized to having different dogs around and realize she doesn't have to play with all of them.  As she gets out of the puppy stage, it'll be left behind.

I would talk with the neighbor of the yellow lab, see if you can work together.  It would be good for both dogs.

I trained my Black lab to the book Richard A Wolters, Water Dog, good book, but not all dogs learn at the same pace, anyways when you pick your dog up on the 49'th day. 7wks, take them everywhere with you. Get them around people and noise also other dogs. This will help them as they age, to see it as no big deal. My lab was a handfull till about 21 weeks, I took him to a bus stop and used to just sit there. he would bark and wine, pull on his leash. then one day he stopped. dogs and people are no big deal anymore. It is nice when I'm hunting and getting in the boat or changing he just hangs out, other dogs come over he gets happy but never leaves, it always the other owner yelling at there dog. You can teach an old dog new tricks, but there is no excuse for dumb dogs, just owners, good luck.

An E-Collar and a leash.Very little stim. or You will have bad effects.Dont Burn them on minor corrections.Low setting.It will keep there attention.Good Luck.
P.S Harley ( My Lab) is 2 y.o and He still gets playful around other dogs,but quickly returns to business.Its O.K to let them be social.To some degree.
