Henry M. Jackson or Glacier Peak Wilderness High Buck?
« on: January 20, 2010, 09:55:14 PM »
I'm wondering if anyone has hunted in either the Henry Jackson Wilderness or Glacier peak Wilderness? I'm thinking of hunting Glacier Peak over by Image Lake, but I've also seen some nice area in Henry Jackson.  Mostly I'm trying to find an area where the hiker traffic isn't bad and isn't heavily hunted.  I figure the higher I go, the less people I'll see.

Well, haven't hunted either of those wilderness areas, but from what I know Glacier Peack Wilderness is full of hikers.  The general rule goes though, the farther from the roads, the less people you will see.   :twocents:

That is the golden rule.  I haven't hunted in the last couple of years, but from what I've heard its pretty difficult to find a spot without people.  I figure I'll give it a shot though.

My VERY limited experience so far with the high hunt has been, no trail = no people.
I also must add, I saw no animals either...
I was in the Henry M. Jackson this last season, for the last couple of days only.

I've hunted from the Little Wenatchee Ford trailhead in to the Henry M. Jackson for a number of years.  The problem is that after 5 or 6 miles, you cross paths with the Pacific Crest Trail and the hiker traffic begins.  It's nice country and these guys are right--the further you can get from a trail, the better off you'll be.
There ain't much that won't fit in my fryin' pan!

I am planning on bowhunting one of these wilderness areas too.  I have been doing research on where in the wilderness areas but mainly just researching what gear I need to buy.

Any info would great.

My opinion is that google earth and easy access to satelite imagery has f--ked up the high hunt.

 :yeah:

Not to mention the ever increasing focus on backcountry hunting.  Finding an area without people is tough but can be done.  Good luck.

Oh, you can find spots with out people, you just may have to work hard to get there.  All the work is worth it though!  I have much more enjoyment with hunting un-pressured animals and not seeing anyone!

I have been thinking about hunting the High Hunt this year also, any suggestions on units to hunt, I would prefer to not even see another hunter or hiker. I have not done much research on the hunt yet but from reading this I may scrach the plan :dunno:

cancel your plans for the high hunt if you don't like people.  I have went to a number of places for the HH in GPW and this last year we saw about 30 ppl in a couple drainages on a midweek opening day.  We didn't stick around for the weekend crowd.  I can't imagine what that was like.

Dont give up on it, anytime in the high country is worth it. Stay mobile and move if there are other hunters.

I hunted the Lake Chelan Rec. area for five days starting opening day.... one forest ranger came and checked out my campsite, checked my tags and license. Saw an old couple on the trail while I was hiking out to the truck. three straight days didnt see a soul. but I wasn't on the trail. ... it was tough hunting though and maybe thats why there were no hunters in that area. Did see two deer and four bear.  . . In 08 was in same general area for five days and saw a couple groups of hikers... and one party of five hunters that were on their way out because they didnt know how to read a map and didnt know where to find water. same story on animals though lots of bear but just a few deer. I only have to have one mature buck for me to be happy though.

Only done this twice. . .But I think you can find an area that doesnt have a ton of people if you study your maps... and you will never have a great experience hunting or hiking the mountains if your scared of running into other hunters... I would think other hunters would be good to see....hopefully means there is more deer then what I am used to seeing :chuckle:

Looking at SURVEYOR's posts, it seems he is one of those professional computer scouters.  He wants everyone to tell him where to hunt without ever stepping foot into the area.

I have got a great idea.  Come July put a pack on your back and hike into these areas that you are interested in and go check them out.  That is how learning/hunting an area USED to work.

There are sooooo many places to go within these wilderness areas where you can get away from people. The people actually help the guys/gals who are willing to get off a trail and on theor own. The people in the obvious areas make the deer/bear move into the good areas and after a few days they can be thick...and moving a lot.

If your a pu$$y and scared to get lost or if you're not prepared like you should be than stay home!!

Where does it seem like he wants everyone's spot? This site when hunting seasons close becomes hostile and really there are a lot of a$$holes that come out,He was asking in general where to start.

It's true. Every time he has posted all he has done is ask about this unit or that unit, and if anybody has hunted there, and are there snakes.     :chuckle:

And you might notice that he never responds to any of the replies on any of the threads that he starts. Pretty annoying if you ask me. I won't respond to any more of his threads.
