Deer.  Have one point just want another point for next year.    They don't have ghost points.  If I draw its a DIY around Broadus or returning to Fort Peck area.

deer and antelope for me.  probably only going to draw antelope though, since I drew deer last year.

Do you have any preference points for deer?

No preference points, unfortunately...but who knows...I'm not picky, and to be honest, its my first year trying for out of state hunts. I'm in it for fun and trying to shoot a second deer, not trying for some of the "hot" areas just a second buck.

I drew the Deer A Combo last year with no points, so you're right, it could happen.  But to be honest, that was a fluke.  You have about an 18% chance of being drawn your first year applying.  The antelope draw odds go by unit.  Take the draw odds published on MT FWP website and figure your chances of being drawn are about 40% of what is published (the number published is the draw odds for resident and non-resident combined, I think).  I put in for 3 areas for antelope last year that had draw odds in the 80-90% range, and I didn't draw.  But, I have a point this year, so if I put in for similar areas, I expect to draw this year.
Had a great mule deer hunt last year, by the way.

Seriously, Thank you for the advice. I have a friend that goes to MT every year for everything from Deer to upland birds. He draws either deer, elk, or antelope nearly every year. I am putting in for multiple areas like you had said, and to be honest, if I draw: GREAT, if not...that just means more time to prepare for Washington Mulies! I have not shot a big mulie, and never a whitey, so I'm just hoping for an opportunity at a buck

Last year was my first out of state hunt.  I drew Montana Deer A Combo.  The hunt was fantastic.  My buddy and I both ended up tagging average 4x4 muleys, so no spectacular bucks, but we had a great time and saw tons of bucks.
BTW, for those of you wondering about the prices, I just got my apps in the mail yesterday, and the prices (right now) are the same as last year, so I am sending my stuff in just as quick as I can get a stamp on it, just in case they raise the prices this spring.

GUScottie, if your buddy draws a deer tag every other year as a non-resident, he is probably putting in for the Deer/elk Combo license.  If you buy the extra point, you have about a 50% chance of being drawn, but it costs quite a bit more than just the Deer A combo ($643 for Deer/Elk as opposed to $343 for just deer).
I don't put in for both, since I wouldn't have time to hunt both deer and elk properly and make it worth it, but some guys do because it gives them better odds, and they don't mind the extra cost to deer hunt in MT, then they just eat the elk tag.  I DO mind the extra cost, so I just take my chances.
Here's a pic of my buddy Tom and I with our MT Deer.  We saw bucks like this fairly regularly.

Wish I could... Have looked into it a lot.... I'd do the deer/elk combo and plan for a multi hunt.... Maybe in a few years when my son gets older....

Got my applications in the mail thinking about putting in for elk and deer and not wasting my money to hunt in Washington this year.

Not a bad line of thought if you ask me.  If PathfinderJR were another year older, we might not be messin' with WA this year either (unless we drew something good).

Thats my thought I have a lot of points built up and really wanna get drawn but the amount of people is ridiculous so I can save lots of money to hunt somewhere that has more animals.
