09 Bama Buck
« on: January 25, 2010, 02:06:47 PM »
Howdy
I struck out for the first time in 25 or so years here in Wa but still wound up with an okay buck elsewhere.  To save you form a looong, boring story I will give you the shorter version.  I wound up having to make an emergency flight back to Alabama for family reasons on the second of this month.  I wound up getting sick on the way there and had very little ambition to do anything outdoors when I got there.  A bunch of cousins came over and convinced me to buy a deer tag and hunt for a buck that they had been seeing on 40 acres that I still own back there.  They set me up with everything from camo, treestand, shotgun, the works.  There is no baiting deer in Alabama and spot and stalk is damn near impossible due to all the leaves on the ground and long visibility.  I am in my stand for several hours when his buck shows up.  I watch him come to me in a dead line where I nailed him at 30 yards with a 12 gauge.  I'll save you the rest of the details but bottom line, I had to go to the hospital a couple of hours later and my wonderful cousins took care of my buck for me and had the head skinned and wrapped for me to haul it home the next day.  I gave them the meat and hide as a thanks.  They want me to come back next season to hut deer with a spear.  I'm going to try and make that happen.
I have been incapacitated for the last week and a half so I pulled it out of the soap today and snapped a couple of pics.

Thanks man, I'm working on it.  I was surprised to see that buck, I was expecting something tiny compared to our bucks.  He was a little bodied deer like you would expect.  You should see some of the bucks my cousins get with a spear.  There is a lot of CRP, private farms and tons of oak trees to keep them well fed.

Congrats - got to agree with Bone too.  Great southern deer!  Good thing they don't shed on the same schedule as our deer.

Hope your feeling better soon.  Sounds like a trip full of highs and lows.

Good looking buck, congrats, and get well soon!
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.

I lucked out in Dallas.  I ran to the other end of the airport and found an earlier flight.  My flight from Seattle landed at 1:15 or so, by 2:00 I was at the other ticket counter and on stand-by and by 3:00 we were taking off for B-Ham.  Pretty sweet cuz I was feeling like crap.  The pics make him look bigger than he is.  He is 15 3/4" at the outside widest.
