Elk react to a varmint call
« on: January 17, 2010, 08:33:47 PM »
I was getting set up to do some calling for a cougar and I noticed 2 elk across the canyon bedded down in the open.  I called for awhile with some turkey distress calls and a couple other sounds...looked over at the elk and they were still there....about 800 to 900 yrds away and up hill quite a bit.  However, when I used a cougar whistle call....the elk were up and running in a matter of minutes.   There was a large creek between me and the elk that was running at a pretty good clip and making a lot of noise.  I was surprised that they heard the sound.  I watched that area for an hour and never saw anything that could have spooked the elk.  Don't know if they heard the sound or not, but the timing of when they got up and ran was perfect.
Interesting anyway.

i called a cow in last year with a rabbit distress call. she came charging out of the brush right at my foxpro. i shut it down as i could just see her stomping my call to death. i waited for her to leave turned the call on and she came charging back. i figured it was time to end it so i stood up and she bailed. they are very in tune with the woods and I'm not surprised they heard that from so far away

reminds me of when I was a kid. When the deer would come out in the field next to us we would sneak around between them and the woods and blow on a piece of grass. You know the call it sounds like a rabbit in distress. Them does would come charging right in to us and stand just a few feet away. They would snort and blow while stomping around trying to figure out what was going on.

Fun times!!

When I went bear hunting I used some mouth calls because eletric are illegal and ended up calling in 3 does, and no bear.

I didn't make it clear....but the Elk were running in the opposite direction and I think it may have been the cougar whistle sound I was playing.

Elk respond  to predator calls especially when they have calves near by. By using a distress varmint call, game biologist get elk cows in close enough to dart and tag or install a radio. They told me they have to be real carefull to have some sort of barrier to keep them self from being stomped.  The people I was talking to, said they had called in coyotes and bear while trying to bring in cow elk.

I have often said that calling makes you a better hunter. You quickly learn those ears are like satellite dishes.
Once I was separated from a friend by several hundred yards but visible and in contact with radio. We both saw elk walking away at 800 yards. I told him on the radio to watch the elk as I squeezed an elk hand call. The elk turned and started coming our way.
