layout boats

[Ragged Outdoors]

We are getting ready to begin our search for some layout boats.  Actually, what we are looking for is more of a hybrid, like a marsh rat or aqua-pod.  I seen the links for some of the different brands, but we want to hear what people think of the boats they have experience with.  Something that is low profile, but can be paddled and hopefully transported from truck to water by one person.  What kind of boat do you guys have, maybe some likes and dislikes.  Can't wait to hear your suggestions.

I have a marsh rat magnum and my partner has a aqua pod.  They both work great,  money well spent. 
 His Aqua pod is about 20# lighter and paddles more efficiently.  My marsh rat is like paddling a big shoe box, but I like the little ridge around the gunnel it helps me get the dog in the boat.  You won't be disappointed with either one.

i would go with the NL so you could fit your dog in too!, but i guess you could always motor out to your downed bird to get it or paddle wichever

I am about half way through mine.  Since I am deploying next fall I won't be able to hunt for 2 years there is no point in holding on to it and having it take up space in the garage.  I would probably part with it for the cost of materials ($125) if anyone is interested.

I would get an aqua pod. Those work great.  Or the new marsh rats mad of plastic.  They are a lot lighter then the old fiberglass ones.  They both work great.  I used to have a MLB layout one, but you couldn't paddle it around.  What type of conditions are you using it, for jump shooting, paddling, etc.?  Poke boats are good to, but I would still lean towards the aqua pod.  Available in 6', 8' and 10'.

We are going to use em for hunting over dekes, but the problem is we are going to use them in so many different conditions.  If budget wasn't a concern, we would buy an aquapod/marshrat style for small water and one of the bigger more traditional layout boats for divers and seaducks out in the open water.  Since we can all only afford one, it will probably be the aquapo/marshrat or something else comparable so we can do everything with it.

i got my marsh rat direct from the company and couldnt be happier. i can keep up with any one in a pod, they paddle just fine when you figure out what works for you

i think im gonna build the NL version. it looks like it has the lowest profile and would be the easiest to paddle around.

Does anyone have one of the Otter or Carsten’s boats that they sell at Cabelas?   The Stealth looks like a nice boat but it is hard to tell just from the web pics.

I was looking at those poke boats. how do you order them? and between the marsh rat and poke boat, which do you prefer? I am looking at something not over 70 lbs. and not too long...
