birds for training?
« on: January 27, 2010, 03:48:39 PM »
Anyone know where a person can get birds for training in the puget sound area?   Looking for cheap qail perferably, but pheasants or chucker would work as well.

bumping it for you since I, too, would like a good line on this.  Currently I can only get pigeons occasionally.

I get my birds down south near Vancouver.  I too would like to find someone in Tacoma or Puget Sound that has birds.  A friend of mine in Portland has pigeons he offered to me, but I don't have a coop.

I have some bobwhite quail and some ringneck pheasants if folks are interested, send me a PM with what you are looking for. They tend to sell pretty quick after the hunting season is over.

For my dogs, I go to Carol @ Gryphon Ranch in Rochester. $5 for quail and $20 for pheasant roosters... they have hens, ducks, pigeons, etc. http://gryphonranch.com/

I raise pheasants and bobwhites. Mostly for dog training but they are raised in flight pens and can fly.

Has anyone used a cage type pigeon trap to successfully get birds for dog training?  I am thinking of buying one and would like to know if they work first.

I should have some pigeons this spring and I am in Burlington. I am catching some now but just enough to train my dog with. Once they start breeding I should catch a lot more. Hit me up in a few months. I caught about 800 last year and sold a little under half of those.

For about 20 bucks you can buy some 2x4's and cheap chicken wire at home depot.  That is how I made my pigeon coup, though none of the pigeon's were long term residents ;)

I have a guy from Oregon that might be meeting me half way with a bunch of chukar, pheasant, and ducks for training. I am trying to make it worth his while and get a bunch of guys that wants birds to pony up. I could hold them for a day but everyone would need to pick them up right away. Anyone interested? I will get the exact prices and post them here if people are interested.
Thanks

I usually have some coming out my ears by now but not this year so far. If you find a good source with a bunch let me know. I might have to buy some this year myself if it stays this slow.

That's a mix of pheas and chukar, but there about 50 chukar there.  I have somewhere around 400 eggs due to hatch next weekend.  I never get better than about a 85% hatch rate, so I'll be happy if I end up with 350. I'm setting more the 17th, and then that will be it for the chukar.

Birdguy, got your PM, can do!  March 26
