Heres my 18 month old Brit.    I sure hope she does lots of this on Friday.   She's running in an Open Gun Dog trial in Georgia against 40 other Brits....  One of them is the 2009 Brittany Open Gun Dog and Amateur Gun Dog National Champion (first time in history a Brit has won both the Amateur, and Open National championship in the same year).   My pup is gonna need all the birds she can find...

Pen...

I will.  Im not holding my breath since this is only her 5th trial.  But she has shown really well.  She got her derby points in her 4th trial winning the Music City Brittany club derby trial.  After that, it was pointless to run her in any more derby since she couldn't get any more points.   I just hope she finishes and doesn't get picked up.  For the judges to place her would be amazing.  But at 18 months old, Im not expecting her to place.  A good race would make me happy as a heck though....

Dave

She didn't do too bad at all.  I was actually really happy with her.  It took her a little time to adjust to being back with her trainer/handler, but once she did she really poured it on. She ran a nice brace at shooting dog range and handled really well.   It was the first time she had been handled off horseback since mid November when she won her derby trial.  Since then Ive been hunting her off foot.  She was a little out of shape but not too bad.  She had one unproductive, but I know for a fact there was a bird where she was pointing, but it was moving on her and the wind was going against her.  She locked up nicely but the trainer couldn't produce a flush.  He then relocated her and she had lost the scent.  She moved around trying to find it but the wind had really changed.  She hunted for a a minute and then moved on.  A dog found the same bird in a later brace when the winds were really favoring the dogs in the afternoon, but it still took them almost 10 minutes to find it and flush the stupid thing.  She won't place since she didn't have any real bird work, but yesterday bird work was at a premium.  I believe there were only 2 dogs that found 2 birds, 3 or 4 that had found 1, and the rest had zero.  They got through 11 braces (22 dogs), and have 9 braces today.  She will stay with the trainer for the next three weeks and he will road her and work her off horseback during that time.  I was really happy with her range even though shes not running as bid as id like her to.  Id love to see her run All Age but in all reality, there is probably only 30 true All Age Brittany's in the country, and her sire is one of them.  The dog she ran against was a "tweener" dog.  A big running shooting dog but a small running All Age dog.   My pup ran almost as big as her bracemate, and at times ran bigger, so I think she will continue to open up as she gets older and more confidents.       Overall though, I was happy.  Shes only 1 1/2 and shes running against dogs that are 4-9 years old and in their prime.  Her perfomance was was probably right in the middle of the pack of the dogs I saw run.  Not to bad for a young dog.  She runs another gun dog trial next weekend and then a Derby Classic (45 minute derby trial) 2 weeks later.  If she shows really well in those we may send her to the Pennsylvania shooting dog Championship.  Thats a big trial against all breeds of dogs.  Id love to see her compete i that one.
