Bow Rests ????
« on: February 02, 2010, 07:16:09 PM »
I'm considering updating my bow with a new rest. I've been using this site to research the posts regarding them. You know, drop aways and biscuts style rests. Then I got to thinking.....is there really anything wrong with what I have ? It's a Quik Tune launcher type rest made by NAP, that although no longer the rage, there is absolutly nothing wrong with it. Works with every pull of the string. I do not see many posts on here discussing these types of rests. So it got me to thinking....do I really need a new rest or just trying to keep up with the latest, greatest thing ? If I were buying a whole new rig, then maybe go with something different, but I'm the type of guy who likes
familiararity. Are the above rests really that much better ?

you do not need a new one, but i like a full containment rest for sure, won't have a rest on my bow that isn't.

I currently shoot a Trophy Taker Pronghorn but will be changing this year to a QAD or WB.  Nothing wrong wtih Trophy Taker but I'm sure it cost me an elk this last year, maybe two, as during rushed draws the arrow popped off the launcher.

crunchy: it wasn't the full containment one there are several full containment trophy takers that prevent that.
i like a cage no problems like the arrow falling out or getting jerked out etc.
if you like trophy taker you might look  at them.

What's regarded as full containment ? Mine has two prongs that cradle the arrow like a drop away. It falls down with the aid of springs to clear the arrow. The drop aways I 've looked at hold the arrow very similar. It's my understanding on drop aways that a string or cable is attached to the bow string from the rest to " cock " the arrow as the string is drawn, then the rest drops to clear the arrow, right ? In my mind a biscut rest would offer full containment. Or I'm looking at different rests than you are mentioning. I don't see any difference between what I have vrs a drop away in that regard. Please correct me if there is and what rests they would be.

the full containments means that the rest will not let the arrow fall off once it is inside the rest for the fall aways. and the biscut is full containment and there are other like it as well the ones like you taked about are refered to as prong rests if they don't have a top on them like the quad pictured and untill the bow is pulled back the prongs don't hold the arrow some rests like the qad'd can be cocked as well hope this helps.

The way I see it, if your setup works, you don't need to change anything.

Don't break what is fixed.  I went from a whisker bisquet to a drop away.  Less noise.  My arrows made a slight hiss leaving the WB, and it messed with the flight a little.  I actually have gone to the trouble of setting up my digital video recorder behind me and slightly to the left, and record my shots.  I downloaded the video to my Mac and ran it in slow-mo on movie software.  Same arrows through the WB and the dropaway flew a lot different off the string.  Both ended up hitting the target, but the dropaway had less "wiggle" at the nock end, and landed more consistent.  Also, less tendency for my fletching to tear at the leading end.  WB are great for walking around with the arrow at the ready, but I got a arrow catch, that sits on the shelf of the riser, and the arrow clips into it when not at a draw.  When I draw back, the arrow pops out.  I can walk around with the arrow ready with it.
The only difference between a butt kisser and a brown noser is depth perception.
