Long time coming
« on: February 06, 2010, 12:15:59 PM »
Yep, I'm a hypocrite, I took my daughter shedding in February instead of waiting until May.  My disclaimer is that there wasn't an ounce of snow on the ground, they were whitetails and most had been run out of the country from the 4 four wheelers and one dirtbike that had went around a locked gate on a closed road.   Anyways, it was about as wet as it gets and pouring rain.  It stopped just long enough to snap a pic.  Her second antler which I stepped on without even seeing, I didn't snap a pic of because it was pouring so hard.    As we approached the target area I spied fresh moose tracks and was hoping we'd catch him feeding in the basin.  Sure enough, a medium aged bull (that had shed already).  Soooo, she got to see her second moose.  I talked to him for a bit and he talked back so she got to enjoy him a bit.   It was a great morning.  He mom had a change of plans so we didn't get to hit the second area.

Because I don't get to see her nearly enough, and we don't get to hike much together, this was extra special and she found her first and a total of two for the morning.

I'm betting he shed in the road, and the wheelers picked it up.  We hit the brushpiles HEAVY for it.

nice job, congrats.   I put a few miles in this morning looking for some blacktail sheds with no luck. I have been thinking of heading over to look for some mule deer sheds but not sure what the snow situation is.

The shed hunting over here is going to be a little tougher this year.  With the lack of snow from 3000' down they have dropped in a much larger area this year.  A friend of mine found 3 in two days of hunting in a spot he took nemerous last year.  He said the bone is spread out from high up on the south slopes to the reg. spots in the lower winter range.
Should make for a good challenging shed season, but watch the private property, I know of two tickets already issued to people who were unaware or didn't care.  :dunno:

It would have been nice for the weather to have cooperated a bit.  I guess it compromised as it was supposed to snow.  The top of th ehill was turning white a bit as the temp was right there.   It was flat wet.   Today would have been a good day.
