Training the dogs today at Scatter Creek
« on: February 07, 2010, 05:06:17 PM »
Took the dogs down to Scatter Creek along with 5 pheasants to do some training. The plan is to place the birds one at a time in a field and have the dogs flush them up and retrieve them. The first bird flew away and we could not pick up the scent again, even with weights on it to slow it down. We ended shooting two bird and ringing the neck of two birds that would not fly, just run around. It was a god day out in the field. There is still more to learn and more to teach the dogs, but we are off to a good start

Olddog gave us two extra birds after we bought three from him, thanks Larry  :IBCOOL: your the man......

The wife is cooking the pheasant with a recipe she found on the forum and we will see how good it is. this is the first time she has cooked, and first time we are eating pheasant. ( i snuck a piece of the bird an so far it taste good  :EAT: can't wait for dinner)

Here are some pic from today.

I had a better write up done but accidentally erased it, and i was not going t do all that again, so you get the short version.

I see that it was one of the melanistic that got away.  That should start some talk at Scatter Creek.  I knew they weren't good birds, but it sounds like you ended up with three decent birds out of 5.  We'll get together later this year with some better birds.

It tastes just like chicken.....really

I see here that you made it out for a great day, disregard the post on the upland thread. Glad to see you got both dogs and the daughter out too, awesome. Keep it up the dogs take a couple of good years to really get it. It is sure fun along the way though. Great pictures as well.

Very cool. So I think at the preserves they dizzy the birds before the plant them so they don't fly away that second, they still may a few minutes later but less likely since they are hidden!

Very Nice-=Good to see you guys Sat. night.
