New sight suggestions????
« on: February 08, 2010, 03:06:39 PM »
I'm in the market for a new sight for my '05 Ultratech.  I have a solid 5 pin fiberoptic sight on it right now, and I shoot good with it, however I think the pins on it are too big... at 40 yards the tip of the pins are covering a dinner plate sized area... Not sure about you guys, but I like somethin that I can aim at quarter-sized target with.  What do you guys use?  Thanks!

im shooting through a trophy ridge Micro Alpha 5 pin.  i think the fibers are around .019 DIA.  at 40 yards the fiber covers a dot a little bigger than a cope can.

if youre looking to get real small coverage at any yardage i think replacing the fibers with a smaller diameter fiber would be best and cheapest if that possible with you current gear

I really dig the Copper John Deadnuts 2 Scimitar.  I think it had .010 pins.

I have a Copper John Dead Nuts 2 Micro - great sight and very rugged. it has .019 pins. If looking for a new sight I would look for one that for sure had the micro adjust and .010 pins on the lower pins would be nice. I saw a sight with these features but the name is slipping my mind. If I come across it I will post it on here

I just mounted and shot a new sight this past weekend.

Axcel Armortech HD, 5 pin custom. top 3 pins .019, bottom 2 pins .010.
I loved the adjustability of the pins, better than my Black Gold Solaris HD 4 pin (now back up sight).

The smaller bottom pins made quite a sight picture difference at 50 & 60 yards. Shot better and helped my confidence at those longer distances. Shot 3 sets of 4 arrows each and grouped tightly within a 9" square drawn around the center of the Block target dot.

Givin my experience with Copper john sights I would most likely go with another one of there products. Saw this video on their website so I thought I would throw it on here

Spot Hogg, Hogg It, 8 inch extension bar, .010 wrapped pins with light... subtends 6 inches at 50 yards

I'm never going back to anything else.

Wow!!! some serious choices out there, all those sights look pretty sweet, especially those Apex sights with the click adjustments...

Pardon my ignorance, but what are you referring to when you say the "micro adjust"?  I have an older toxonics sight on my bow and its served its purpose, but I'd really enjoy something a bit better...

What about older Spot Hoggs?  I know I can find some on Archery Talk for a decent deal...

the micro adjust, atleast on my sight, is adjustable by a screw.  so instead of the non-micro/cheaper sights where you loosen the allen bolt and then slide it around with your fingers hoping not to slip.  i simply loosen the allen bolt and twist a screw head, i can adjust it in much finer increments than with my fingers like my old sight.

i will never buy a sight without the micro adjust now so much simpler and i never had the problem of adjusting it too far and having to start all over in the opposite direction or try and squeeze out the 1/16th of an inch with my bear claws for fingers.

Gotcha!  Just google'n some reviews for that Apex Bone Collector and it seems like its got some great reviews, and $100 aint bad imho...  except the fact that its only got 4 pins.  My bow ain't shooting fast enough to not have an individual pin for 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60... (trust me the ONLY reason I would ever shoot at 60 is if the animal was already wounded and I wanted to put a 2nd shot in it and couldn't get closer so please don't bring ethics into here.)

Konrad, where are you finding .010 pins for the Hogg it?  I only see them advertised with .019 pins...

Love my Spot Hogg.  Wish I'd gotten micro-adjust though.

Spot Hogg is the only sight that will be on any of my bows!  If I can fall on the ice and have my almost 300 lb carcass drive my Spot Hogg into the ground not once but several times and it not break or tweak at all, that is the one I will stick with.

I bought mine new from The Two Morrows Supply:

http://twomorrowssupply.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=SH-HI&Category_Code=Spot-Hogg

Bill Morrow is a straight shooter and at the time (last year) he had the best prices hands down. Mine was special ordered from the factory and shipped direct to my house.

I played with the old brass pins and two other new sights including the Apex Gear Nitros (.019 pins). The combination of being able to make an adjustment and then return the pin and/or housing to its original position, the fine aiming points and excellent levelling adjustments have moved my maximum practice from 40 yards to 60 and reduced the amount of hair I was pulling from my head. I would practice at a further range but ran out of pins (only shooting 240 fps).

Struggle with your old sight and focus on grip position, hand/release position, sight picture, release control and follow through until you can afford a Hogg...any Hogg.

Nothing but straight dope here.

Good to know guys... I'll be making very good money this summer and plan on picking up a new sight with my first paycheck...  What benefit is the "wrap" on a sight?  Things have sure gotten more complicated than when I first started shooting 6 years ago!

I would ideally like to pick up a Hogg used... $240+ (if I go with .010 pins and a wrap) is a lot of money for a sight.  However I compare it to a rifle scope or a pair of binos, buy quality the first time and forget about worrying...  We'll see if I pull the trigger or not.  Thanks again you guys are great

I switched to a Trophy Ridge inline sight, it does seem to give more view than some of the others mentioned above.

I hear tons of good things about Spot Hogs but I think they kinda spendy. I really like my Black Gold Flashpoint. I can't remember what I paid for it though. I think it was around $100 bucks.

Guy on AT selling NEW Spot Hogg - Hogg it Hunter's 7 deadly pins for $229 with wrap and I can get .010 pins.... talk about tempting!
Also got a chance to read 15+ reviews of the Real Deal and Right On Spot Hogg sights... and even though they're a little cheaper, they are getting just as good reviews as the Hogg It.
Real Deal with seven deadly pins in .010 and wrap to my door: $189.37
Right on with above combination: $167.54

Phool, just took a look at your Trophy Ridge inlines, look like very nice sight except I would really enjoy something with the .010 pins...

The "wrap" is fiber optic material wrapped around the sight housing.
Older "fiber optic sights" only had a short piece of fiber mounted inside the pin and did not gather as much ambient light.

I forgot to mention, if you have any questions you can e-mail or phone Bill. He'll get right back to you.

The wrap for the spot hogg makes the pins much brighter, and worth the extra cheese, seven pins are a little busy for my taste 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80?   I would go with the Spot hogg hunter model 5 pins, unless you plan on being one heck of a shot. The nice things about the spot hogg is the adjustments, and very well built.

I have another vote for a 5 pin over 7 also.  Mine is a 5 pin and is a bit busy.  I am going to maybe start shooting just using one pin.

Thanks Mark, its hard not to get caught up in getting the "Latest and greatest" type stuff... thats why I'm open to some of the other Hogg It sights and other good brands.  5 Pins is more than I'll ever need I'm sure.  Also would you guys suggest the .019 pins for the top 2 or 3 pins and the .010 pins for the bottom 2 pins?  Seems like that has been pretty popular.  However I believe most ppl are going with the .019 because they are brighter, but this shouldn't be a problem with the pin wraps so I'm leaning towards all .010 pins...  What do you think?  Thanks

I replaced my trophy ridge inline sight with a Spot Hogg micro adjust 5 pin with .010 pins.  Shoot much better with this sight, but I personally don't like the micro adjust and don't have a need for it.  I'm not too sure that mine worked correctly out of the box, and with it coming from a small archery shop in Montana, I doubt I'll be back anytime soon ask.  Personally, I see no need for 7 pins.  Glad to see others that also agree with this being a great sight.

MtnMuley, you can write or call Spot Hogg with any questions you may have. They are very interested in your satisfaction and will welcome your questions. I have found a call, rather than writing, gets an answer faster.

Perhaps I am biased after struggling with so much junk in the past. I am a Hogg consumer! Got the Whammy rest and B-Stinger stabilizer too.

No pins - instinctive shooting.  Instantaneous shots but you are limited to about 35 yards.  For those of us who like a challenge - old school.

Maybe with a trad bow lol...  Something about no sights on a compound for a challenge just seems contradicting to me.  I've made my own long bows before and really enjoy shooting traditional, but until I become an extremely successful bow hunter will I ever switch to traditional gear.

WDFWsux, wouldn't the "halo's" be dependent on ones own vision or am I thinking of something totally different?

vision and light.. Ive got perfect vision but somthing about the .10 is too bright sometimes.  Its not a big deal I just like the 19's better but if you ask 100 guys you might get 50 different answers.

Check them out in person see what you think. Oh and stay away form the blue pins they suck.

Good to know thanks...  I'll see if I can't find a dealer somewhere and go check them out.

No pins - instinctive shooting.  Instantaneous shots but you are limited to about 35 yards.  For those of us who like a challenge - old school.

Uncle Ted used to shoot his old Oneida Screaming Eagle instinctive.  He was a damn good shot that way too.  He did use a release though.   :)

The only time I have had issues with pin brightness is when strong sunlight is striking fully into the front of the site (facing into the afternoon sun).

This is the only time I have had to use the light to properly see the pins!

I have been using the .010 wrapped pins for a year under all lighting conditions, including fog, snow, rain, dusk, morning and afternoon light with ambient light coming from all directions and never seen the "halo" referred too in the above posts.

Just my experience.

Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter can not be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.”
