Oak Creek elk shed auction?
« on: February 15, 2010, 10:27:51 AM »
Hey Guys,

I was wondering if anyone knew when the Game department was going to have their shed auction at the Oak Creed feeding station this year? I've always wanted to go and see for myself but it seems like I always find out the weekend after it happens. I'm sure it will be at least a month or more but any heads up would be great, Thanks!

John

Not sure if they are going to have one or not.  They accumulated like 7 years or so for the auction they had last year.   Most of the sheds aren't going to fall off in the station this year either.  If they do, its often on the weekend of the opener, or May 1st I'd imagine.

Last year it was held either at the end of April or first of may. I went over for it and they had collected quite a few sheds some from previous years and they had several from the Mount St. Helen's area as well. I haven't heard anything about this year.

I seem to remember last year saying afterwards that it wasn't going to be an annual thing, they would save up teh sheds for a few years and then do another one.

the auction was 5/2 last year.

Am I the only one who finds this B. S. !!!  I can see the sheds from oak creek getting auctioned, but to go in to St. Helens and collect them.  They keep it (St. Helens) closed untill like May for the public, so they can collect them.  They are keeping manny for themselves, I know this first hand. They dont provide near the amount of feed in St.Helens as Oak creek and this was a mild winter to boot.

If they did an auction for St. Helens it at least should be on the west side. ??

I kind of agree with that, but they've kept feeding stations closed until May 1 everywhere for a long time, no sense in changing it just because of a light winter, that'd just confuse people in following years. Also, even though they are making money on that auction, it does cost money to put together. We all complain about how money is spent in the game dept so why would we want them to spend more to have multiple auctions? Put them all in one place and give lots of notice as to when and where. Thats how I feel anyway...

Allright, thanks for the info guys. On years when they do go through with the auction, how does the WDFW get the word out? I guess I'm wondering if they would post it on the website or if it would just be word of mouth.

I do agree that if the deadline is May 1 then keep it, and yes I agree in keeeping the cost down. I just feel that the shed sport is being commercialized and should not be. Maybe roll the price over to the tags for that area if they want to keep feeding and not on the sheds.

Didnt mean to jack the thread. They start advertising it on wdfw and you will find posts on here when dates get posted.

I was at Oak Creek on Friday.  It was my first time there.  I'm still drooling.  The nice lady volunteer I spoke to said that the auction they held last year was their first and it took five years to collect the antlers.  It didn't sound like they'd be doing on this year.  I was a moron and forgot my camera.  I'm going back this week with my daughter.
